here's a question for all of you saavy travelers... what's your favorite website or online forum (such as this one), aside from Lonely Planet, for traveling outside of Europe? At this point I think I'm more interested in central/south America or maybe even Africa, but certainly if you have suggestions for other areas, I'd like to book mark the websites.

First of all I have to say, that I like this one most. I like Lonely Planet, but I don't like the way their forum works, I very easy lose track of topics (and I don't have the intention to subscribe to every topic, as it would fill up my mail account very quickly) I also like www.travellerspoint.com, also for the extra features (blog, photo gallery, travel map)

I would also check out more informational websites like www.about.com... and then consumer-based travel sites such as rei.com, campmor.com, llbean, and the such. While I realize those other consumer sites are there to sell you stuff, they usually include a lot of great traveling information as well as links to lists, products or tips you may need. Realtravel.com is a fun site to read about other travelers' experiences and has great photos, although those are mostly journal and blog entries, not a how-to site. But I second Herrbert that THIS (guideforeurope.com) site is the best for all of your traveling questions and concerns. I got so much amazing and useful information from so many people on this site when I was planning MY European trip. And there is almost always someone here to answer your questions. lol. Just beware.. if you ARE planning to buy stuff online, do go around and compare prices first. REI.com is like a candy store for backpackers, but the prices there aren't always the cheapest. Good luck! Irene

As some have already commented, the GFE Message Board is my favourite! For travels other than Europe, my choice would probably be Thorn Tree / Lonely Planet.
Cheers!!!

don't get me wrong, I LOVE this site, esp. the message board!!! but it is after all, guide for *Europe* and I would feel like a doof trying to start a thread and ask questions about Peru, etc.
