The E 15 for the Istanbul-Bodrum trip was in a Dutch interrailguide, not a LP. Anyway, I'm sure it could indeed be more expensive like you say, but still not too expensive.
I think it's more likely that the info on LP's website is more recent than any info in their books. I mean, what would be the use of such information online if they wouldn't update it regularly?
I understand that sometimes it's cheaper to stay the night somewhere in the city if you have to travel an hour to get to your camping/hostel...But like you said on the weather subject, there's a wide margin. I mean, there's a difference between staying somewhere that's a 5 minute walk from the centre or staying somewhere that takes an hour drive.
What about 15 minutes in a bus or so? I don't think that's such a disaster.
Friends of mine only had to travel 30 min. to their camping ONCE, in Barcelona. All the other times the campings were much closer to the city.
I understand that sometimes it's more convenient and even cheaper to stay in the centre somewhere...if so, we'll do that, but campings are not per definition too far away.
And to say you won't find backpackers and/or like minded people on campings is really nonsens.
Where did you come up with that?
My friends and acquaintances who traveled in Europe stayed on campings most of the time and met a lot of great people...(young, old, backpackers or not...whatever, but they had a great time).
There's a website in Dutch of two people who also travelled Europe by train (summer 2001) and they wrote down exactly what they spent each day. They came to an average of E 18,41 for Spain, and E 24,08 for Italy (Morocco E 14,73...but we're not going there).
They also went camping and yes, they did meet people, saw some sights and didn't starve.
I don't know what the big difference is between your trip and theirs but it's obviously possible to have a nice trip on a low budget like that.
Yes I believe prices have increased since then but 30 Euros a day is not necessary I think.
