Well I finally decided, for once and for all, to go back to the UK instead of Italy this year. (A most difficult choice indeed!) Specifically England. Although I spent a month there last year I ended up mostly in western England, Wales, and Scotland. There was so much in eastern part of the country I never made it to........Winchester, Dover, Cambridge, Oxford, Portsmouth, et al....so am heading off there again. Have been pre-planning and researching, but thought I'd ask.....any special places or things I should not miss in this region? Come on, flood me with your fav spots and memories of this area so I can add them to my plans! ;D

Which places you actually visited? Did you see the so-called West Country (actually, the south west)? And what about the Midlands and the north of England? What time of year are you travelling?
The only place in the south-east I visited, besides London, is Canterbury. The most important cathedral in England is there (the head of the Anglican church is the bishop of Canterbury). Brighton is a popular sea-side town in the south. If you didn't see Windsor, you should.

I saw Oxford on your list of places-to-visit, I've been there two years ago and was a bit disapointed. The city itself is beautiful, but you hardly get to see any of the university buildings, unless you pay for a ticket for literally EVERY building, garden, library.... Students sometimes get discounts, but I guess you are past that age Still, I'm sure it will be a great trip! Cat

I'm an australian living in south-eastern england, and it truly has some magical countryside. The best place i visited was Groombridge Place Gardens, a childhood fantasy come alive. Hever Castle was lovely, and a general drive through the Ashdown Forest and see Beachy Head, Brighton's fun, and a go off the main roads, get lost in the back roads and discover amazing little hamlets, near Arundel and the Bignor Roman Villa was amazing. Have fun!

When I was there some 10 years ago, I remember Cornwall and the fishing villages around the coast. Funny to see surf shops on the other side of the world. Lands End is the southern most tip of England, a must see and Bristol had the newest Backpackers I have ever see, its also a port for sailing boats. Bath was lovely and had Roman Ruins. Dont forget to see Stonehenge.
thats a start GG

Lands End is the southern most tip of England Actually, it's the WESTERNMOST point of mainland England (excluding the isles of Scilly), but not the southernmost. This is the Lizard point.
