Okay, I am traveling with my boyfriend to Europe. I will be there for two months (Late Aug. - late Oct) and he'll be joining me for three weeks (late sep-mid oct).
We will be planning on going to some clubs and cathedrals while we are there. What are the dress codes for these places (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Venice)?
We are really trying to determine whether or not he needs to bring dress shoes or whether he can get away with nice tennis shoes.
Also, what type of pants should he bring? Thanks!

Thanks for the websites! I will point them out to him. His main concern is really the weight of carrying extra shoes when he isn't convinced that he will actually have to use them. Some places we were looking at going says that there is a dress code, but he's thinking he can get in anyway. Are dress codes strictly enforced?
Thanks for the help, I'm liking this message board thing too!

What about a pair of nice mens sandals? They could double as going out shoes but also be practical for walking around in the day if he wanted.
Alot of the main clubs have a "no trainers" rule - which means no tennis shoes so no matter how nice they are, he would be out of luck.
Honestly though, if he's just going for 3 weeks and you guys really like going out to the clubs, I say just bring 'em. It's only 3 weeks and it's better than not being able to go out when you want to.
As far as the pants, the only rule I've ever seen is no jeans so other than that, he should be good.
I'm going to send one of our members that is from London (MuvverRussia) and one that is from the Netherlands (Cat) to this thread to see if they can shine any light on this subject.

for pants I'd go with khakis or cargos. for my upcoming trip I decided to take 2 pairs of zip off cargos. this way I won't have to bring any shorts and they'll take up less space in my pack.

Saw my name mentioned in the post and thought I'd add my bit.
In the Netherlands it totally depends on what kind of club you are going to. Some clubs state dress codes in their house rules, and with tennis shoes you can't get in. If your friend takes his doc martins he should be fine though.
And do bring a nice pair of pants and not just jeans, that could also couse problemes.
But, again, these dress rules usually only apply to the 'fancy' clubs. You can have a perfectly good night out while wearing tennis shoes and jeans.
As for churches and cathedrals: In the Netherlands there usually are no dress codes. But, speaking for myself, I'd feel a bit uncomfortable visiting a chuch wearing hotpants and a tank top, for instance. You would get frowned upon. Uncovererd head and shoulders are fine, though. Just use your common sense and you'll be fine!
Have a good trip!
