Does anyone have first hand experience on what kind of discounts are offered for having a ISIC (Int'l Student Identity Card)? Are they really worth it? How close do they check for full time status as a student when you apply?

It's definately a good thing to have, if you can get one. Many sightseeing attractions offer quite good dicounts with it.
Quite a few places offer a student discount. A tip-even if you don't have a card, say you're a student. Half the time they will ask for your card (you "forgot" it), and the other half of the time you will get the discount. Doesn't hurt to try! I'd say it worked about 50% of the time-and I was 26 at the time!

I had the ISIC on my first trip, and no one ever asked to see it. It expired and I never renewed it. I asked for the student discount at Neuschwanstein Castle this year, and they wouldn't give it to me without the card or a school ID. If you don't buy the card, at least bring your student ID. I once tried to use the ISIC for a sight in Boston that was on the list of discounts that came with the card, and they wouldn't give it to me! They told me they never heard of it, even though I showed them the list that was quite clear!

One thing I forgot to mention: I was able to use the ISIC on my first trip to get a great discount on the Eurostar Chunnel from London to Paris.

Yeah, they will never ask to see it-you have to constantly ask if there is a student discount. There usually is at main attractions. They won't offer it up though unless you ask.

Thanks for tips/suggestions to date. I should add that I'm not exactly a young student traveling, more like an old worn out one. Do places question if I'm looking for discounts as a student being in the 40+ age bracket? I do have a local student card, not the ISIC one. Is the ISIC fussy on the point of full time status?

I don't the the ISIC is fussy at all -- from what I've heard (from reports of people telling others to just cheat and make a photocopy of someone else's grade sheet pr something...) they're not fussy. I don't think my school ID even had a graduation date, and I know that my current graduate school ID doesn't have a date on it, either, and doesn't say that I am part time. Whether you are part time or full time shouldn't matter -- you are still a student. So, if you have an ID (part time or full time, probably the same ID), you should have no problem getting the ISIC.
