Thanks dustoffmom for the reply! Let me explain trip details. I am taking my daughter (who is in college) on trip to Rome for her 18th birthday present. (I took my other daughter to Rome and London last March for her 16th)
We bought a package to Rome (cheap) that included air and hotel (breakfast, taxes, etc..,), the airline, stops in Munich to and from home. For an extra 149.00, we can take later flight back and see some of Germany, and since Salzburg, Austria is so close, thought we could "skip" on over and take a peek as well. Our stay in Germany is on our own, from Jan., 7-12th. What to do and see and how to get there and where to stay for the 5 nights?
I indeed read your commentary on the ' Live from Europe' board, that is one of the reasons I love this site! Where have you guys been? No one let me in on this jewel. Anyone can call a travel agent to book their travels, but when one does it on their own--the independant traveler with budget attitude, sites like this are invaluable!!! Thanks again for being here.
We (could be just my sister, her teen daughter, my two teen girls- a "girl trip", or as much as 13 family and friends, all teens and adults) ALWAYS travel to europe because the price is too good, one can't afford NOT to. Always scouring the net, pubs, mags, for the cheapest bargins and when I tell people who much it cost, their mouth drops they don't know where or how to find these deals. It does take time thou.
Anyway, this trip, is what my daughter asked for for her bday present( she turns 18 on New Year's Eve) since she missed Rome trip last March. All 3 of my children have taken Latin for 4 or more years and seeing Rome and its' sites have alot of meaning.
The Germany stop on the return was an added bonus, that I thought would be nice. I just wanted to get a plan together, and need to reserve rooms for two nights one place, two nights another, etc.., (double rooms at hostels few and book up in advance) I am not crazy about arriving with no where to stay.
Any help or suggestion you have for us will be taken. I want to go to Linderhof, thanks for pointing me in the right direction with that one. I just need info on getting to the Andechs Monastary, etc..,. Thanks for all your help!!

If you read my commentary then you already know I adored Salzburg! For my money a good choice of a few days stop. And again, take the silly Sound of Music tour! Gets you out of the city into the mountains a bit, totally corny and I had fun. If you like the movie at all, this is worth it. As I said in my note to you, Kim is your gal for hostels. And I am sure she will be replying once home from work today. You have a total of 5 days to play with....correct? And you want to do Fussen and Salzburg? Okay....when do you arrive Munich and when do you depart? If you arrive in early a.m. and leave in p.m. that almost adds another day to your time. One could easily spend 3 days in Munich, 3 days in Salzburg, need one full day for Fussen area......you tell us first, what would you LIKE to do? BTW....why the bus to Salzburg? Train would be faster. Nitsansh....can you gather up some rates and timetables for this, it is an area you are best at here! ;D Will wait on everyone else to put in their two cents worth! ging I will dig out my books and try and get info on Andech's for you.....I believe they have a web site, will check on that too.

And if no one tells my boss, I can even work on the hostel part from here (just can't check my emails due to a firewall).
So where will you need hostels for exactly-just Munich and Salzburg?
In Munich, you will have to stay at an independent hostel (which is no big deal), due to the fact that the HI's have a age restriction (forget what it is..under 26, something like that.)
Also, I'll look into some pensiones for you-as it looks like there might be at least 5 of you, it's a good option as well.

Hi Shelly, Got the link for you to Andech's.....sorry, forgot to check it out to see what the travel options are to get there! But it is a great 'real German' place with the best of german food and beer to be had! Well worth a stop if youhave time and it is feasible. It is: www.andechs.de/englisch/index_main.aspAgain, let us know what your 'wish list' is and we will put our heads together and see what develops. Waiting on Nitsansh for travel options....... ging

Thanks for all your help!! I said bus, but want to take train to Salzburg. Only my daughter and myself going. Arrive in Munich Jan., 7 at 1:05 p.m. and depart Jan., 12 at 11:30 a.m. i have checked several hostels, some do not have availability. The ones I did find and thought were nice, Munich-Senefelder St.5, they say it is a redesigned luxury hotel. no age limit either. $28.98 per person for 2 bed private (is that good?) in Salzburg-Hotel Lasserhof( it is a hostel) just a 3 min., walk to Mirabell castle, old town, train station. $42.00 per person for 2 bed private ( is that a bit high for a hostel?, I am thinking x 2 is $84.00 and I am sure they add on some taxes, may total out to be $95.00 on up. should I look into 2 or 3 star hotel at the same price maybe??) Your thoughts?
With the 5 days being open, I would like to visit Neuschwanstien castle, Linderholf, Residenz, Andechs Monastary (I saw their web site!) and concentration camp. Travelling towards Salzburg, can stop along the way if there is anything, and once in Austria, The Sound of Music tour, that's all besides walking around town doing the town tour like St.Peter's etc..,
I don't know where Fussen is, but if it is interesting, would like to do it too. Is it a day thing or should we plan on staying overnight? Also, must return to Munich for departure on the 12th at 11:30 a.m., should we save some things to do/see for the 11th, on our way out?
I printed out train schedule from Munich to Salzburg, I said bus incase there were must see places on the way. Straight to Salzburg on train is good.
Hope this helps. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience.
warm regard, Shelly

Real quick Shelly.....my g'daughter is here just now so time limited .....Fussen is the town nearest Neuschweinstein.....wasn't trying to send you off somewhere else, jsut getting you to nearest town. I stayed in a great hotel in Salzburg, right in old town area, and I will have to check but feel sure it was no more than you are quoting. And it was a great place as well! I'll get back to you later tonight. ging

....she's busy watching Peter Pan, the current fav! .... Here is where I stayed in Salzburg......http://www.holidaycityeurope.com/amadeus-salzburg/ DO NOT go by these published rates. I paid 40 euros for 3 nights, each of course. There were several others in the same price range, and I was there just a couple of weeks later than you will be. I'd seriously check around, unless you really want to stay at a hostel. For 95 euros you can get a damn decent hotel in town in January! Hostels should be a great 'bargain'......if not, I say go for the comfort! ging

Your children are so lucky! My parents didn't discover Europe until a few years ago when I went after college. Now they're as addicted as I am. Too bad they didn't learn that it's cheaper than Disney World until I moved out and got married! Austria was the highlight of our trip through Central Europe. We absolutely loved Salzburg. We stayed at Pension Elisabeth, which was fine for the price, but sounds like you are willing to spend a lot more. If money isn't an issue, spend more to stay in the old town. This place is (albeit super efficient and quick) bus ride away. pension-elisabeth.at Another place we loved was the small, ancient town of Hallstatt, which is only about 2 hours from Salzburg and on a beautiful lake. We stayed at Gasthof Simony -- it was a budget traveller's dream. www.hallstatt.net/gasthof/simony/index.php3?lang=en&frames=linksThe saltmine tour was a lot of fun. We wished we had more than one night here. My husband wanted to stay, and we got into a huge fight over it! We almost didn't make it to our 1 year anniversary... We had set plans and were headed to the Czech Republic, which we knew was flooded. I was stubborn and insisted that we continue on with our plans. I should have listened to him because we couldn't stay in Prague and had to come home early. ): Neuschwanstein was incredible. You can reserve your tickets now and pop in to the ticket office and pick up your tickets without a wait. www.hohenschwangau.de/In Munich, we stayed at Hotel Helvetia, which was just okay. www.hotel-helvetia.deI've been meaning to post accomodation reviews in my 'just back' journal, and I promise I will, when I finally remember while I am at home!
