The closest I've really been in that area would be Prague, in the Czech. Republic, which I loved. Not really next door though.
Yugoslavia is bordered by Macedonia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Croatia.
I've heard parts of Croatia, esp. by the water are gorgeous.
You do want to be careful though, read your travel warnings for countries in this area as some can be unsafe for travellers.
(On a separate now, I recently returned home from Indonesia, Bali to be exact at the end of Sept. Wondeful people-would love to explore more of Indonesia in the future.)

Vienna isn't too far away, closer than Prague. (Austria is the closest i've been to any former yugoslav republics) Vienna, as well as Prague, is beautiful! Vienna also wasn't under Comunist domination. it's a different feel.
Vienna's culture is wonderful!
Btw, Gloria, your name makes me eager for a x-mas show from my favorite band. for x-mas time, they play "in excelcies deo," which leads into Gloria, by the Doors! it's a hoot!
ps. word has it that Slovenia is also nice!
