Can it be done?
Well, I'm planning it! Feb 2004 is the big date, beginning with whirlwind tours of London, France and then overnight to Rome. (Obviously I'm planning early, but with a degree to finish before I go, and budgets to consider, not only does it give me FANTASTIC procrastination devices, I just feel better this way).
Italy for 6 weeks including Easter.
Over to Athens, hopefully with a bit of budget to do Santorini --> why? bah, 'cause I can!
Anzac Day (25th April) in Turkey (patriotic Australian).
Love to do Cairo from Turkey, we'll see.
May: Up through Romania and Hungary incl; Vienna.
June: Poland and Czech Rep.
July: Germany, Denmark, Holland.
August: Belgium. Beer(s). Beach(es). *boys* ;D
September: See what takes me. Also gives me more flexibility for side trips etc.
Have I forgotten anything that I should not miss on this trail?
I've found these messages so incredibly helpful. Many people seem to be travelling for short periods of time: is there anything extra that I should consider, from your experience, given that I'm going for a longer period of time?
A few other random pre-travel planning questions I have are:
Q: What is the experience of other females travelling in these countries alone? I'm one of those people who are so much more comfortable in jeans and docs than skirts etc; a mate of mine, originally blonde, actually dyed her hair dark before she went over so she didn't stick out so much. She said this helped. I'm a red head. I don't anticipate any problems. Any thoughts? Going too far?
Q: What is the best option for Anzac day in Turkey - to do tour, or not to do tour? I like the sound of Anzac House to stay in. What are other Aussie / NZ experiences?
Q: What are people's experiences with security? I'm doing a lot of reading with regards to overnight trains through Italy especially where passengers are virtually sitting ducks for theft. Is this a case of the minority being more vocal than the majority? Would this be the same situation for backpac slashing?
Q: Having never encountered this problem, I might just ask it here: Recharging equipment, ie; MiniDisk players. Is it just worth taking AA batteries, and forgetting the recharge capabilities? Coming from Australia, different power supplies etc . . is it worth the trouble?
Q: Are Doc Martiens 8-ups fine to be used as everyday walking shoes, considering distance and pack weight? Warm, waterproof, versatile --> what do other people wear? I'll carry sandals for showers and Summer weather.
Q: I know that this is Europe oriented, but, just as an aside, has anyone been up through the Ukraine (Kiev); Russia (Moscow); and Belarus (Minsk)? Costs? Advice for finding further information? I'm just doing a bit of dreaming.
Ok. That's it for the moment. I'm sure I'll have other questions as soon as I sign off. I'll just keep them coming.
I hope you guys who are travelling have a fantastic time, and that the experience is everything you anticipated it to be - and then some!
