Hi all,
I'm wondering if any of you have tried to use sedatives to sleep thru your long-distance flights.
Realizing that the jet lag could be quite harsh, I would hope to sleep thru the flight over to europe. I recently had a bad experience with fatigue. I was unable to sleep at all the night before a cross country flight and wound up exhausted and nauseous when I finally arrived.
I just wonder if it's better to stay awake and drink water, etc...

definitely rest up 2 or 3 days before you go. Last time I went I slept on the plane, arrived at 2pm local time, went to be at 6pm. I don't really think sleeping on the plane helped much. You have to remember that your bodies biological clock is on a 24 hour cycle, if possible try and adjust your sleep and ease yourself into whatever time zone you're going to (if that makes sense).

I agree, it's hard but you have to put your body on the time it is when you arrive.
As in-if you arrive at 12 noon, stay up until at least 7:30pm before going to bed. Adjust your schedule on the plane accordingly.
We are going to Bali & Bangkok next week (oh my god, it's next week!!) and fly out at 2:55 am. We plan on sleeping on the plane (yep, will probably drug myself with gravol or something) as we get in at 10:30am. Have to try and stay awake until around 7pm.
We stayed awake the entire way to Amsterdam (I was too excited) and it was pure hell when we arrived at 11am. We had a nap right away and totally screwed ourselves up. After that, I made myself stay awake until 8pm or so and I was fine alot sooner than my boyfriend that would fall asleep at 6:30 or 7.

Kim Be aware that when you fly westward you go back in time (although, since you cross the date line you'll arrive a day later). It's said to have a lesser effect than going eastward.

Here's hoping so! I would rather be more tired when I got home than when I arrive somewhere.
For Europe, we were dead when we arrived but fine when we flew home. Think it was because we got home around 8pm and just went straight to bed. Next morning, I felt great!

Of course, the bigger the time difference, the greater the jet lag... I believe it's 10 hours difference between Vancouver and Bangkok... does that mean the flight is 18-hours long??? and the change of climate doesn't help either... You MUST get some sleep on the plane...otherwise you'll be some 40-hours sleepless by the time you get to Bangkok... If that's possible, sleep late the day before you fly and adjust your meals time to Bangkok time...

Yep, it's 18 hours long.. And the kicker is that we fly from Victoria to Vancouver (15 min. plane ride) and sit in the Vancouver airport 4 hours until 2:30 am... It almost might be better actually, cause I should be good and tired by then. Definately taking some gravol with me to knock me out as I get too wound up and can't sleep! Kim

Just curious... which airline are you flying? Is it non-stop flight to BKK? And BTW... isn't there a shorter route to Bali? Bangkok is some distance further west!!

We could have flown directly to Bali but we wanted to spend a few days in Bangkok first.
We fly Vancouver to Bangkok via Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. Supposed to be a good airline, so we'll see!

when i flew to Tokyo as a teen, i found myself up and about early. and, since japan's time schedual is based on sunrise & sunset in kyoto, the sun was up *way* early!
the sun was up, the birds were flying, but almost no people were about. (this didn't seem to fit with stories of overcrowded Tokyo!)
i later found out it was about 5 am!
