We're going to Europe for six weeks next summer and are absolutely flabbergasted where to start. We've bought the packs and the passport and we know what countries we want to visit and have an idea what cities we might want to visit too. Here's the tentative schedule in no particular order. England (London) Amsterdam Luxemborg Belgium (Brugge, Brussels) France (Marseille, Paris) Italy (Rome, Venice, Florence?) Greece (Athens, islands?)
We were thinking of flying into Amsterdam (it seems to be less expensive) and were trying to figure out a way to purchase a eurail pass for only a month instead of 2... since we'll only be there for half the second month. Would it be worth it to pay for travel separetely for those two weeks instead of getting a full two month pass... especially if we ferryed over to England for part of that two weeks? hmmm so many questions ... we hope someone can help us out! thanks SuperGals

if you want to save cash, look at other rail passes, or just point to point tix. Also, bus tix/passes are often, but not always, much cheaper!
me, who doesn't feel like loggin in right now [pretend there's a pic of homer over there]

point to point is *sometimes* cheaper than a rail pass. But not always.
figgured i ought to be clear in my advice.

I'm at about the same planning stage as you sound like you're at. After figuring out what countries/cities you might want to visit, you may want to decide what you want to see in each and plan roughly the amount of days you'd like to spend in each place. Unless of course you just plan on winging it and going along place to place as you feel. Start $aving too

Why don't you spend the first two weeks or the last two weeks in one place if you only want to get a one month pass?
Greek Islands would be a good choice as you have to ferry around the islands as it is. You won't use a rail pass at all in Greece.
We also flew into Amsterdam and our last stop was Greece. Don't know where you are from but here in Canada, we got a "Back to Amsterdam" ticket which was good from anywhere in Europe to fly back to Amsterdam to fly home. I think it was about $150 CND.
If your travel agent can get it for you, it's well worth it-that way you don't have to travel all the way back to fly home.

Right on! I wasn't sure if it was intentional, looks like not based on me's stars, but it seemed to work out well anyway! Good idea about staying in one spot for the first and last week of the trip. I was about to suggest that myself but I wasn't sure if the cheap inter-europe flights would be cheaper than paying for an extra month for the rail pass. (there's another reason for me to jam my trip into a single month)

I am also planning on travelling around Europe next summer on my own. I would love to have someone to travel with for part of the time.

Sara, maybe you could check back on the board later and post in the "let's meet up section" for whatever month you're travelling in, when it comes up.
Maybe a "Lets Meet Up Summer 2003" section could be added to the board and the June/ July removed.
I probably want to stay in quad rooms next summer and may look to hook up with some people and share rooms when the time comes.

What a helpful moderator Patrick is! ;D The Let's Meet Up July boards have been removed and new ones have been put up to carry us into Sept. 2003. How's that for service? Kim

I thought maybe I'd give a little hint before just going and removing or adding headings. Just in case they were left up for a reason.
