I was planning to visit Prague for a few days in September, but since the city is flooded now, I'm thinking of changing my travel plans Don't get me wrong, I won't skip Prague because I'm afraid of any danger, but I think lots of buildings will be closed then, or the city still is a mess. And... Prague seems to survive the floods, so I gather it will still be there next year. Soooo, does anyone have any tips of other citys in Europe to visit (NOT Amsterdam ), I heard Copenhagen is very nice, or Vienna, but I do want to keep my feet dry! Thanks again, Cat

That's a shame about Prague, it's so beautiful but I'm sure you will get to it at another time.
Cities I would consider:
Rome, Italy San Sebastian, Spain Barcelona, Spain Lagos, Portugal Brugges, Belgium

Hi Kim,
I already visited Barcelona and Rome, and Brugges would be a daytrip for me, so I think I'll do that some other time, but please tell me more about San Sebastian and Lagos. Have you been there yourself?

hi Cat, not sure where you've visited already but I thought that the south of France was really nice when I was there. If you do decide to do the Portugal/Spain idea, you may want to try Nice and Eze in France. Great little medieval type city (Eze) and nice parks/beach and markets in Nice. Also Monaco while you're there. Great place to visit. You could check out the prince's palace, cathedral, tons of shops and cafes and fantastic views of the harbour and the Mediterranean.

Yep, been to both and loved both. Neither one is a big place but both are fantastic. Lagos is a bit more touristy but the beaches are out of this world. Lots of nice little pubs, very fun atmosphere. I would love to go back. Lagos photo: members.shaw.ca/guideforeurope/portugal.jpgSan Sebastian has nice beaches as well and the most tapas bar per square foot in all of... (hmmm...was it all of Spain?? All of somewhere!) A bit more mellow. San Sebastian photo: members.shaw.ca/guideforeurope/spain.jpgKim

I enjoyed Vienna.....baroque (sp?) gone mad....and there is quite a bit to see and do there. However, I would offer that in my experiience while eating and sleeping is rather easy on the budget here compared to other cities of the same size, seeing anything is outrageous! The palaces, museums, et al are quite pricey, and worst of all, they charge for EVERYTHING seperately. To include your coats and backpacks, which you MUST check and then pay to do so. Each part of each palace is a seperate charge, so for example, you want to see the summer palace....it's 8eu for the 'residence', 8eu for the gardens, 6 eu for the orangerie, 4eu for the carriage house....you get my drift? Not saying it is not worth it, just be aware that Vienna can wreck havoc on your budget.
I'd offer Salzburg as a side trip or alternate to Vienna. Much smaller, well preserved, yes, quite a tourist area, but wonderful old town and charming as can be. The mountains in this area are beautiful, the Festung Hohensalzburg is quite nice with views to die for. Birthplace of Mozart and loads of stuff on him there of course, most tourist traps but still fun. I really enjoyed my stay there and recommend it as a good day stop, if not more. (edit....and then of course there is the 100% campy 'sound of music tour' which simply MUST be done! ;D
