If anyone has weather and planning links or advice for visiting Madrid and Lisbon in early September, please let me know. I've been to Europe before, but this region and time of year are new for me! Thanks!!! Brianr

I found this for you:
Madrid:
Like spring, autumn is an excellent time for a visit. The city's mood is quite different as everyone has recently returned to work or school after the August holidays, the temperature is very pleasant with people relieved that the intense July sun is behind them. There are also plently of cultural activities going on. Late in autumn there is always the risk of some rain, but its rarely so much that an umbrella can't cope. SUITABLE CLOTHING: Like spring you have to bring clothes for a range of temperatures. Its unlikely to get so cold that a decent sweater can't cope though. Obviously the later in Autumn you go the cooler it gets.
Lisbon:
Just like June – except that we are in the northern hemisphere and therefore heading towards the shortest days of the year: in October, the whole country has an average of 4hrs less daylight than in June! Nevertheless, with close to 8hrs of sunlight per day, on average, it's much more pleasant than London, New York or Montréal!
(June said: With only one day of rain in Lisbon and Faro (on average, of course!), and five in Porto and Miranda do Douro, this is a perfect time for a grand tour of the country – especially since the tourist masses have yet to arrive, and temperatures remain very pleasant with maximum highs around 25 °C throughout the country and minimums between 10 and 20 °C)<br> I think the average temperature for Sept. for both is about 21 C.

From what I know, Madrid has typical continental weather. Winters are cold, summers are hot. The locals describe the climate as "9 months of winter and 3 months of hell". I think they exagerate about the 9 months of winter... there are 5-6 cold months, between November and March/April. May/June and September/October have mild climate, average 10-15 to 20-25 Celsius. Rain is infrequent around the year. No month has average rainfall above 50mm, but "risk" of light rain exist anytime. I experienced rain in May, which wasn't hard but that was enough to call off the Corrida.
