Hello, this is my first time backpacking, and I am a bit clueless about buying a rucksack! Does anyone know any good shops near Manchester/Bury or Bolton where I can buy good quality, reasonably priced ones? Any other advice would also be great. Thank you!!

Well, I just bought the Rick Steves convertible rucksack/backpack, whatever it's called. I live in Seattle, and his store is in town, but you can buy from him online. www.ricksteves.comAll three of his bags are $99. They were the style I wanted. It seems like I either had to have a suitcase or a hiking bag...you'd think Seattle would have a better selection!!! That would be my opinion.

Make sure that that bag has a waist strap though, the one that goes around your hips. It takes about 80% of the weight off your shoulders and I wouldn't buy a bag without it.
Some of his bags don't have one and this is a major flaw.

Kim is soooo right about this! My pack was not adjusted correctly and I was about two weeks into my trip, with an aching back and shoulders, before I finally got it right. You're setting yourself for a bit of misery if you can't shift the load to your hips.
ging who wants to point out most brands have a 'woman's fit' model, and if you are a shorty like me that makes a world of difference in the comfort to your back!
