I've purchased a convertible suitcase/backpack, and I'll be staying in hostels in France and Italy for the first time. I know some hostels advertise that they provide backpack lockers or storage. Will my somewhat oversized backpack be OK during the day if I carry a smaller pack with me with valuables? Any tips would be appreciated. And thanks, by the way, for the very helpful information I've found from all of you on this site.

Rondomondo, I can't really say how safe your pack will be in the hostels, Kim might better be able to answer that. They should be okay, but myself, being a little paranoid about my stuff, I wouldn't leave anything in my pack that I couldn't afford to lose. And of course... less valuables in your pack = less risk of stuff being stolen!

Most people leave their large packs in the hostel all day, just make sure to take anything valuable, like Patrick said.
I always lock the zippers on my packs shut with small locks-the big one that is left at the hostel as well as the daypack I take out with me.
Usually all that's left in your pack is your clothes and people aren't interested in that-they want the valuables-money, camera etc.
Usually the storage is used for your last day-when you have to check out by say 11 but aren't catching your train until 8 pm or something. Some hostels have big lockers in each room that everyone can put their stuff in including their packs each day but these are rare.
