I've searched through several sources for information on visas and I usually get pointed to work permits. But what I want to know, is what the deal is with getting a visa if you plan to stay in a country for longer than the 90 day period. Is a work permit required to stay past that date, or what?
All I'm looking for is what I need to stay in a country past that 90 day period, and I can't seem to find a straight answer. So I thought I'd come to REAL people who have been through this sort of thing rather than a webpage or a book.
Also, I've heard both that you need to apply in advance for visas and that you can just get them at the consulate when you arrive. Which is true? Or does it depend on the country? And I've heard that some countries don't even stamp your passport. If someone could clarify these questions for me, I would be eternally grateful.

Hi Jon,
Basically how it works is you need a visa to stay over your 90 days in a country, whether that be a working visa, student visa etc.
It would help if you would tell us where you are from and the country you want to stay in over your 90 days.
Some it's near impossible to but if you let us know, we can do some more research for you.

Alright, I'm from the USA, and the countries I'm considering are Switzerland, Greece, Germany and France (in that order). Thanks.

Hi Jon,
First, do you know for sure you will be over 90 days in these countries? It's just these visas can add up.
Basically you will have to contact the American consulate in your area and tell them you want to apply for a working, student or tourist visa for over 90 days. (They can tell you which one is best for you).
They will send you forms and you will have to send back with a payment and your passport. (I'm pretty sure I remember right that even if they don't grant you the visa that you have to pay). I think the fee for the French one is about 78 Euros, which is about $75 US.
Anyway, do a search on the net for the American consulate in your area-should be in the largest city close to you and contact them for the forms.

Couldn't you avoid the need for visa if you leave the country and come back immediately?
