I am traveling around Europe for 5 weeks. I am about to purchase a camera and I would appreciate advice on what camera I should choose? digital or conventional? I would think it should be very small so it doesnt take much space in my pack. I heard airport security xrays machines can ruin conventional film. But I have also heard digital cameras eat batteries for breakfast. And you can probably think of things I havent thought of. Any advice is appreciated.

digital cameras are expemsive, no? i've just taken a single use camera on my last few trips. in the past, i had a 35 mm slr. i'd ask for my camera bag to be "hand searched," no x-ray. don't know if that's still an option after 9-11.
also, digitals have very limited memory, as i understand.

I would go with the conventional as you are going for 5 weeks.
Reason being, you will need quite a few memory cards, which aren't cheap. Unfortunately, you won't find many places that have decent enough computers that you could actually upload your photos. You would need to bring the converter and software, which would be a pain.
If you were going for a week or two and had a couple of cards, it might be worth it.
The battery thing is true... they eat batteries like you wouldn't believe, esp. if you have a viewing screen. You would need rechargable batteries and a charger.
See what I mean? Digital for an extended period can be a hassle. I love mine but for extended trips, stick with a good convential with a zoom lense (as much of a zoom as possible).
I personally love Pentax, my camera is just an 35" standard one, nothing fancy and takes beautiful photos. (Check out my photos page-all taken with it).
My digital is Nikon Coolpix which I love as well-but I'm a Pentax fan tried and true!
