this will be my first time staying in a hostel. i'm not sure what to expect. i'm mainly concerned about security. any comments? also, i've been searching, but it's difficult to decipher between the choices. any recommendations for england (durham, york, london, cambridge, oxford, nottingham, bath, bristol, salisbury, avebury), wales (cardiff) or ireland (kerry, cork, waterford, kilkenny, dublin) or scotland (glasgow, edinburgh). i'd appreciate ANY input. thanks.

It looks as if you really aren't going to Europe, so much as you're going to UK. Well, Ireland too.
Only hostel were i've stayed in UK was The Generator in London. I wouldn't suggest it. The place was not that clean & there were lots of German elementary school kids running about. Busloads of them were staying there.
If you are avioding the continent because you fear language problems, you shouldn't. Most everyone in the tourist industry speaks English. In Holland, it seems like eveyone speaks English!
btw, i've never been robbed at a hostel. just be careful and be sure to take a lock with you!

What to expect...
Well, it varies from hostel to hostel.
A dorm room consists of sets of bunk beds. The rule is the more beds in the room, the cheaper it will be. For example, a 4-share (4 beds) will be more expensive than a 12-share.
Some have a bathroom in the room for everyone to share, some have them in the hall.
Most have a common room for everyone to watch TV, hang out and socialize.
Some have kitchens where you are able to cook meals.
Security wise-always have anything valuable on you. This means if you go to the shower, take your money belt with you. Your pack with clothes in it is going to be fine in the hostel while you are out all day, just lock all the zippers.
Take your daypack and your money belt with you out for the day. Lock the zipper on the daypack as well.
As far as hostels go, the Hostelling International (HI or IYHA) hostels tend to be more serious and have groups of school kids while the independent hostels are more social.
