Hi, I am hoping to be in France this summer working so I will not have the months that most travelers have to travel. I need some advice on weekend travelling (starting point being France) and short-term travelling (destinations, prices.... the works!). As i said i am a first-timer and i need all the help i can get! thanks Bri

If you take overnight trains you can reach a large part of Europe for weekend breaks. You travel one way Friday night and return Sunday night, and have 2 full days for sight seeing. If you plan to do lot of weekend breaks, a rail pass could be useful. How long and how much depends on your location in France - it's quite a big country! From Paris, for example, you can travel to all places in France, as well as Belgium, Netherlands, many places in Germany, Switzerland, northern half of Italy, most of Spain, and England. Also look out for cheap flights that can take you even further, to a Greek Island, the Balearic, the Costa del Sol or the Algarve.

depending on your age, you might be able to get a "half-price" pass. I got one as a 20 year old in germany. it was good all year!

When I lived in Holland I took several trips to paris on the weekends. Just hop on friday night and arrive bright and early sat morning. Get a couchette and you will be set. every trip that i took from amsterdam to paris, the conductor never woke us up.
There is no reason that you can't do the same for Geneva, Salzburg or venice (but the longer the trip (such as to venice) expect that you will spend a lot more time on the train. However, if that is the only time that you have, 1 day in venice is fine. Keep your eyes open for flights - from paris you can get some good deals.

Once again, I'd like to suggest that anyone who is going to be travelling Europe for 3 weeks or more spend a little money on the front side that will go a long way once you're moving around having Fun ! Hers' what I'd suggest: ISIC Card ($22.00), Rail Card (flexability is key), and your Hostel Cards (HI and Hostels of Europe cards). I've managed to save quite a bit of money, go thru shorter lines, and spend more time having fun then waiting around for others who were not all that organized...Enjoy !!
