I just had a wild idea

Okay, so somebody probably thought about this ages ago and there's probably something like it already, but for added security at night in hostels, how about making a sleep sack with an attached pillow case that zips or buttons closed? That way, you could stuff your pillow (or jacket, or whatever) in there, as well as any important documents or money. Then button it or zip it closed, and go to sleep. I know it's rather far-fetched to think of someone stealing out of your pillow case while you're sleeping and your head is on it, but the added security might be nice. Heck, if you already have a sleep sack, it wouldn't be much trouble to just sew a button or two on to it, and wah-lah... a sleep safe!

Anyway, I'm rambling. Please tell me if that idea is dumb. ;-P

I think a better idea would be a hidden pocket in your sleeping sheet. Fold over the material at the top and sew it .

(or if you are really sewingly inclined -not a real word, I know!-, sew a separate pocket)

The thing is is no one is interested in a jacket, it's the plane tickets, the travellers cheques that they want. Making the pocket small and using a zipper (buttons might be too noticable) would be a safe way to keep everything safe.

I bought a sleeping bag with a little sack sewn into it!
But, I don't take my sleeping bag on every trip because it's takes up so much room... So your idea isn't half bad

What about sleeping with your moneybelt on?  (although I guess that would extremely uncomfortable for some people.)  Has that ever backfired on anyone before?  I thought of just having it concealed in a pocket somewhere inside my sleep attire... I didn't think anyone would be gutsy enough to feel me up to find anything because I'd wake up for sure!!  I feared the idea of putting the stuff in my pillowcase of sleeping bag because I am pretty paranoid -- I just imagined myself like pushing the blanket away from my body in the middle of my sleep or like rolling off of my pillow... anything like that.  Some people just sleep all crazy )  Has anyone ever done anything like this though?  The putting it somewhere inside of your clothes ?

i always sleep w/ my money belt on.  well, at hostels i do    

except one place, it was spain i think, where there was a safe deposit box available for free.  actually, *that* might not have been too safe!  but i've never been robbed at a hostel.  there are certainly horror stories about it, though.
