When did most of you start planning and saving for your backpacking trips across Europe? I'm just curious. I want to go in Summer 2009 for about a month to two and I feel like planning this early makes me way too excited and I should put off my plans to plan! So when did you start planning?

I'm planning all the time, even though I don't know when I'll take some of the trips I want to take. But if an opportunity comes along, I want to be prepared . There's so much history, language, etc. that you can read about.

Also I would love to re-educate myself on some of the European architecture I want to see like the Colosseum, the Pantheon (I always confuse it with the Greek Parthenon haha...which I would love to see too), St. Mark's Cathedral, The Palace of Versailles...and so many more!

Greeneyeddreamer, I was totally in the same boat as you are now. I started planning my Eurotrip nearly two years ago which gave me a lot of time to really research where I wanted to go, what I wanted to see, read books and watch movies about the places I was going, etc. (and of course save money!) It made me really excited too but it was a lot of fun to plan and a good reason to procrastinate on school work haha.
It'll actually probably go by fairly fast .. I'm counting down 3 months tomorrow until I leave for my 4 month trip .. so I say start planning as early as you want to. It'll only make for a better trip!
Cheers!

Willtravel is right on the money here! although i don't know when i'll next have the chance to go, family situation is back up in the air, i'm always looking at where i would wish to go.
regaring architecture, what interests you? is it just the classical buildings, like your list. or, do you enjoy more modern stuff, too?
in Vienna, as well as other parts of Austria, and in Germany, i enjoyed Hundertwasser's (1928 - 2000) buildings. in Barcelona, the work by Gaudí (1852 - 1926) is wonderful! these are two standouts. <FYI: the name Gaudí inspired the English word "gaudy">

I'm really interested in more ancient architecture, really. then i'd suggest at least 5 days in Rome. it really is the most important place in the history of Western civilization. and it has the architecture to show for it! - d

(I always confuse it with the Greek Parthenon haha...which I would love to see too), ! FYI, if you can tear yourself away from reports about the Florida primary on Tuesday evening, America's PBS show Nova (do y'all get that in Canada?) will have an episode about the Parthenon in Athens. www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/parthenon/

greeneyeddreamer, I use the same method as WT, in that I've usually got some plans for my next trip "in the works" all the time. It took me over five years to put my first trip together, due to a variety of factors (including of course, money). I find that planning and the anticipation of the trip is a lot of fun, and it helps to "keep the dream alive".
I think it's great that you're planning early for your 2009 trip. That time will pass much faster than you realize!
I'm already working on tentative plans for this year, but due to my work situation I might not be able to travel in the Fall shoulder season as usual. I'm considering a short trip in June to points in eastern Europe. If I can convince my colleagues to cover some shifts for me, I'll start putting the plans in motion (after I get back from Hawaii).
Cheers!

Thanks Eagle. I have the same mindset.
I even bought a little diary where I can jot research notes and plan my trip.
