Oktoberfest help!

hello everyone...i'm new here so any help is greatly appreciated!!!

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to europe for September and October 2008. We have a rough route drawn out but we're a bit stuck since we've now realized that we'll have the chance to be in Munich for Oktoberfest! Our orginal route was going to be England, France, Spain, back up through the french riviera, into Italy, Greece, Austria, Germany, Netherlands, then back to England. But now since oktoberfest is smack-dab in the middle of our trip, we're going to have to make some changes! We'd like to do as little back-tracking as possible...but we want to soak up the nice weather as much as possible before it starts getting a little cooler in october!

to do Oktoberfest, if you want cheap you need to reserve beds well in advance.

Off the top of my head eurobound44, you could look at starting in the Netherlands and going around the other way to ensure you are in Munich for O'fest. Plus you'll be in the warmer parts (Italy, Spain) at the end of your trip when the weather is getting cool up north but is still OK in the south of Europe.

As per David, I'd look at securing accommodation in Munich now then you'll a) have a bed and b) have some dates to work the rest of your trip around. Munich accommodation during O'fest books out by June in most cases, so don't leave it too long. As an alternative, you could stay in say Innsbruck or Salzburg and travel to Munich by train for a day at the 'Fest, but it's a lot more fun to me in the city rather than facing a long train ride after a day on rides and in beer halls/tents.

thx for the replies!! we thought about it a lot and decided it wouldn't be a big deal at all if we went the opposite way on our trip just as you suggested madamtrashheap! now we just have to reserve a hostel bed and we'll be set. starting to get really excited!! thanks for the help!!
