ok, so I'm going for 6 weeks stating may 1st. I thought I'd bring some sneakers and 2 pairs of flip flops (they don't take up a lot of room). I'm not sure what kind of terrain I'll be going through?? going to london, paris, bacelona, nice, florence, rome, swiss alps, amsterdam
should i bring hiking shoes?? strapy sandles?

honestly, everything takes up room. you want to carry as little as possible. i would recommend either sneaker or hiking shoes... whichever is more comfortable for you. i also always wore these on travel days as they were the heaviest shoe and also afforded the most support for your foot, ankle etcc when hauling the big pack around. i would recommend a pair of sports sandles that you can spend a day walking around in and not get sore feet. and a pair of flip flops for the shower... i brought a pair that are actually really nice and doubled as evening out sandles... they were strappy black flip flops (tevas actually) and water from the shower did them no harm at all.

I brought a pair of merrel shoes and a sandal like shoe apart from the pair of flip flops. It was enough for me. Why are you taking two pairs of flip flops?

Hey, i do recommend bringing a nicer pair of shoes if you are planning on going out. I didn't and i do regret that. I recommend bringing one good pair of walking shoes, i brought a pair that was suitable for hiking as well. A pair of flip flops, or comfortable sandles. And a nicer dressier pair of shoes. People say 'don't waste the space' but nicer shoes don't really take up much space in the first place and it's always nice to have them if you want to go out. trust me, i only had my hiking shoes and going to clubs in those was downright embarrasing, especially in a dressy place like europe.

When I go out to the bar now I just wear my sneakers so I don't fall flat on my face. I'm just more comfy in them. Is there a dress code for some clubs?? like no sneakers alowd? can I wear my sandals instead?

there are often dress codes for clubs. pubs tend not to have dress codes. you wouldn't get into most clubs in montreal in sneakers either. clubs as a rule tend to be picky on shoes... sandals as long as they don't look too beachy should be fine. i brought plain black ones with me that go with everything. then again i went to only 1 club and that was in switzerland (i'm not much of a club person anymore). however i went to a ton of pubs in the UK and ireland.

try to get a compfy pair light sport shoes (runners?) in black or white, whatever fits best to your pants. you shouldnt have any problem with dress code in most places with sport shoes, and there is no need for hiking shoes at all the tourist places. and maybe a pair of flip flops for hostels and beaches.

If you are a girly-girl like me, then def bring a pair of shoes for going out! I was the same as bubbletoes in the sense that I would be quite embarrassed when going out to clubs in my Birks, something I would NEVER usually do, I am definitely a high-heels type of girl! I took pair of rubber thongs (I think people from the states refer to them as 'flip flops'!! My 'flip flop' fell off on a Dubai Desert Safari and I shrieked, "My thong just came off!!!" much to the amusement of the American folk around us ), Birkenstock Madrid sandals and a pair of Salamon hiking/trekking runners. I regret not taking a pair of high heels, so unfortunately I had to purchase a pair over there *gasp*

My friend, Danny Allen, developed a camp shoe (The Dan Canyon) to use after the day's hike. They are lightweight and fold flat to go in your backpack! It took him years of home development and field testing to get the design that worked for he and his backpacking buddies….affectionately known as "The Gold Key Club Backpackers Committee". His website is www.campshoe.com He's not a conglomerate…just a guy who saw a need and fulfilled it. His "About Dan Canyon" is a hoot! Genevieve
