In April 2003 I'm going to travel through Europe with a friend and we also want to visit Turkey. We are a little worried about the situation with America and Iraq though, since Iraq is Turkeys neighbour. What do you think? Is it unwise to go there? Would we really be unsafe in Turkey if these war threaths become real?

Hard to say, really. Honestly, I think you could be unsafe anywhere as you never know what it going to happen.
I have a co-worker that just came back from a month in Turkey with no problems and loved it.
As long as nothing obvious or political comes up, maybe you could go for a couple days, see how you feel and if you aren't feeling secure about it, then leave and head to another country.
It's hard to judge a situation in advance. I personally would love to travel to Turkey some day!

Thanx for replying! I also think you're never completely safe, no matter where you are, but my friend was a little shocked when she read Turkey is producing extra gas masks in case there will be a war Well, we will see...I've been there twice this summer and absolutely loved it too!

I really see no point in predicting the future... If the previous Gulf War is any indication, Turkey should not be affected. Especially western Turkey, which is thousands of KM from Iraq border. Istanbul is as close to Rome as to the Turkey-Iraq border, and well out of range of any missiles the Iraqis may have.

Turkey won't exactly be Iraq's best friend if they help the US with the attacks, but well...we'll see. I agree that serious concerns aren't necessary right now.

Very few countries are Iraq's friends...

I'm an American student living in Germany since August '01. Traveling in central Europe should be no problem at all. You have almost nothing to worry about. Just dont be blatantly american and try to avoid any demonstrations and you will be absolutely fine. I have no idea about Turkey though

It's pretty sad that a war is probably going to start, people will lose their lives and loved ones, and here I am worrying about being an American in Europe... Trying to find another perspective.
