Does anyone have a suggestion for the coolest neighborhood in Barcelona to stay in? I am going to stay in the Latin Quarter in Paris because I have heard great things about the particular area. I have not heard, however, anything about a particular area in Barcelona to stay in.
Any suggestions?

In Barcelona, I stayed off of Las Ramblas at that big HOE hostel. It was a good location. I wasn't there long enough to see much more than top tourist sights.
If there on a Sunday afternoon, go to the cathedral door for a big folk dance. It's fun!

Stay at the Ramblas. If you can't find any accomodation there, Eixample (hope I got spelling right) is not too bad as well. As long as you remain about 10 minutes walk from the Ramblas, it should be fine.

The neighborhood with cheap accommodation near La Rambla is called the Barri Gotic. The area closest to the harbor area and Maremagnum has some shady characters at night, though, but is reasonably safe if you keep your eyes open.

That's where most hostales ( cheap hotels) are. Besides, from there, you can go anywhere by foot or by metro. A good central location.
