You could duct tape them so that they aren't hanging loose.

I would usually just tuck them around the bag... you know tie the strap around the strap (i don't know if this makes any sense how i'm describing it). the hip buckle and chest i'd snap together (the airline will make you do that anyway). my friend bought a cheap canvas drawstring bag that she'd slip her pack into before checking it in so the buckles didn't get caught.

Hi! I bought a weather cover for my pack, it wasn't too expensive and it tucks into the top pocket. Normally it goes over the front of my pack for when I have it on me when it rains, but what I do in the plane is I put it on the side of the straps and tape it there. This way, no straps!

not sure this is a good idea. the duct tape could leave a sticky residue which would certainly bother me! - d You could duct tape them so that they aren't hanging loose.

Michelle, this shouldn't be a huge concern. From what I've seen, the airlines will "shrink wrap" Packs that don't have stowable harnesses. It's similar to Saran Wrap, but thicker and wider. The only disadvantage is removing it at the other end, especially since cutting instruments are usually inside the pack that is wrapped!
Ask at the staff at the time you check-in. They'll soon let you know whether this option is available. Another option - carry a large Glad bin bag/garbage bag and place your pack inside that during transport (pack a second one for the trip home, they don't take up much room). I've heard of some people buying a cheap Duffle bag for this purpose, but that leaves the problem of what to do with the duffle while you're travelling.
It appears that your Pack was designed more for mountain trekking (reference to places for Ice axes or whatever) rather than travel, so maybe the manufacturer didn't think this would be used for air travel too much?
Good luck and happy travels!!!

That reminds me that on our LHR-CDG flight on BMI, my son's backpack was wrapped up in plastic for the flight. He just went over to a special counter for oversize baggage (although it wasn't oversize), and they put the plastic on. On the flight over, he had been able to carry it on, but BMI has stricter rules for their intra-Europe flights.

thanks guys! I think the garbage back rout is what I'll do - if they can't shrink wrap it at the airport.

you usually have to pay for shrink wrap at the airport. i've only ever had it done for me once. and i think that was air canada... but i don't really remember...

Yup, you have to pay! I said duct tape, but I mean just ordinary see through large tape like you use to tape boxes when you move. It leaves no residue at all!

Here's an idea.. (if you choose to use tape).. Place a layer of paper or make some sort of barrier between the tape and the fabric of the pack... that way, the tension remains, but the sticky residue is stuck on the paper... HOWEVER... The TSA has the right to open and search all checked luggage... if you take the trouble to pack and seal it, they could open it, and possibly neglect to re-tape it.. Just some thoughts!

and he brings back the post from the dead...
was thinking the exact same thing today lol got bored and didnt want to study so started playing with my backpack lol its got a cover that goes over the harness so its sweet there, except the hip belt part is hard to make flat, but the other straps all dangle. (http://www.openair.co.uk/shop/index3.asp?display=detail&id=253&query=&reset=yes) My bags gonna be going through Melb, Sydney, London and Paris airports on its way there (as am i) so guess its better to get it wrapped. We also get our bags wrapped in plastic because of Shepelle Corby who she claims baggage handlers put cannibus in her boggie board case (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schapelle_Corby) ...
