I think the best thing to do in Venice is get off of the main canals. Just wander aimlessly and you will find yourself on small canals, residential areas etc. I found that to be more magical.
(Obviously, don't go wandering alone at night however. I'm sure you know that but I just had to say it! ;D)
What a great place to have your birthday!

How I agree, and was going to say the same thing. Step out of your hotel, turn right, walk a bit, turn left down the next little street, walk a bit, turn again...you get it? Just wander! Many of the 'streets' there are barely wide enough for two folks to pass comfortably. If I got too lost, I would just begin following the folks in front of me! I was there off season.....few tourists, so assumed they knew where they were going and would eventually end up someplace I could find on a map! Take the water taxis and spend a day visiting Murano, Burano, and Tortacelli (?)!! The best! And do not go wandering at night alone! First thing the desk at the hotel advised me! Main canals and sites are fine, but teeny little back ways not such a good idea. It's not a dangerous city, don't misunderstand, just a place to take care in. ging who found it most economical to buy day passes for the taxis
