In between my travel from France to Italy I want to spend one day in Switzerland. Would you suggest Zermatt or Lucerne? Or another place entirely?

I haven't been to Zermatt but I really liked Lucerne. Covered bridges, the lake etc.
According to Nitsansh, Lucerne has a population of 60000 where as Zermatt is 5000. It really depends on whether you are looking for a larger or smaller place.
I think Zermatt might be more awkward to get to but I do like the fact that it's car free.
