Has anyone here got any recommendations of things to do in Munich? Going to be there in mid july if it helps (managed to get a bargain flight out to there- £40 return from Cardiff ). Has anyone stayed in the 4 U Munchen youth hostel either? apparently it is near the central station and according to lonely planet accommodation around there is seedy. Still, only need somewhere to crash.

I loved Munich. It's a city known for its beer of course, so head down to the Hofbrauhaus and sing "Country Roads" with the rest of the crew. Walk to the Marienplatz and imagine yourself in the 30's, with all the swastika banners hanging over the buildings. The English Garden is a great place to relax and undress, and even surf in the river.
There's lots of daytrips you can do from Munich. Dachau is very close, as is Neuschwanstein(actually, it's 2 hours by train). Both were worth it.
I stayed at the 4 You Munchen hostel, I liked it for the location. But the showers were a pain, you have to push the button every 3 seconds or hold your back against it. The laundry was nothing to write home about either. Frankly, it didn't work. But if you just need a place to crash, it's a good place.
One great thing about Munich, you're bound to drink and you're bound to have to use the washroom at midnight. What better way than to take total advantage of the free toilets in the subway?? ;D

thanks for your reply. Yeah, it seems likely that a fair bit of drinking will be going on- especially since beer is sold by the litre there instead of pint as here= drink litres as fast as pints As for the youth hostel, it was the cheapest we could find. Does it tend to be quiet or more of a party style one?

The "4 you" in Munich is only two blocks from the main train station, and it is a good place to meet others. if you want a place that is a little less lively, then maybe consider the Euro Youth Hotel which is located right outside the Hauptbanhoff (main train station) on a quiet street 3 minutes walk from the station. Both places are about the same price.

A few fun things to do in Munich... ** the Deutches Museum - a HUGE museum with all sorts of stuff, especially cool if you like science (yeah, i'm an enginerd ;D). From what i remember, it's fairly inexpensive for a student (~5DM two years ago, which worked out to ~ (US)$2.50) ** check out the surfers (yes, SURFERS in the middle of Germany, with wet suits and all!) at the south end of the Englischer Gardens). There is a "river" that comes out of some under-the-city-waterways that creates enough of a current/ wave that people can surf on it. Just walk along the street that makes up the southern-most border of the Gardens, and you'll see it. The rest of the Englischer Gardens are also quite nice - a good place to rest your feet for a while! ** Mike's Bike Tours were recently (yesterday) recommended to me for Munich, and I'm definitely planning on checking it out when I'm there late this July ** The Glockenspiel - at designated times, the music plays and the figures dance - definitely a Munich trademark. Hope that gets you started! Also, I stayed at a hostel near the train station... forget what it was called, but it worked for a place to crash (safe, clean, etc). Like most places in July, if you aren't going to get there early in the AM (ie overnight train coming in at 7AM ;D ) be sure to have a reservation. Actually, a reservation would probably be good regardless of time of day... Enjoy, and have a great trip! ~Nicole

you can check all three Pinakothek for 12 euros in one day...It is however, a very ambitious project. Not too far from Alter Pinakothek, there's the Siemens Forum, a free museum about Siemens , the electronics company's products and how they are used, transportation,etc...
From what I have been told, the BMW museum is not worth the trek. There are enough BMWs in Munich to look around for free.
Bike around the city, it's a very biekable city.
Concerning the English Garden, you can see peopel surf, enjoy the sun rays naked, or have a beer at the Bier GArden as well...

I agree with the mike's Bike tour. I took it and was exteremly happy. You can take either just the city tour. Or you can do daytrips with the city tour to Dachau(Concentation Camp) or the Castle which disneyland is based after. But there are some real good people giving the tour. Nicole gives the one to Dachau and Drew from New zealand gives the city one. Both real good people:) After the tour stop by the Haufbrau<spelling> house hitlers old drinking hall and you will see most of the kids from the tour there. Good times! Also in munich make sure you spend loooots of time in the English gardens. It's absoutly amazing:) I wish i spent more time there. well enjoy Cheers Gary

just got back, sad to leave the place.
Had a great time, drank beer in the hofbrauhaus with some others from the hostel, went to dachau, went to the museum (very big, took a long time to look around it). Spent a couple of hours in the english garden, again had beer there (seeing a trend here?) and saw the people surfing. Didn't do the bike tour, we saw most of the place just walking.
The youth hostel was pretty good though and we met a load of people. Might be off to prague in september as long as I can get a cheap flight so hopefully it'll be as good.
