 You can take a local bus from Aberdeen into Stonehaven. Walk to the Marina then ask a local for directions to "the path to the castle". It is moderately steep at the beginning then basically a flat coastal walk through fields. This is the best approach and takes a leisurely 20 minutes. The best part of the castle is the exterior view so you can photograph to your hearts content & not bother paying admission if you prefer. There is also a road...not sure where it begins. NOTE: the sun is behind the castle in the morning so you might want to wait until noon for a better a view.

I just looked it up on the web so I could see some pictures and wow! You could get some great shots out of that from a distance.
