Hi, Next summer I will be visiting Barcelona, Paris, Venice, Florence, and Rome. I don't want to spend all my time in the major cities and was wondering what the best day trips for these cities were. Please give me any advice or suggestions. Thanks!!

From Florence you could do daytrips to the local Tuscan country side and visit Siena or San Gimignano. You could also visit Pisa and nearby wineries. If you're really ambitious I suppose you could do Cinque Terre on a daytrip -- but I doubt you'd want to do that!!! From Paris there are an endless amount of day trips, here are a few: Versailles Vaux-le-Vicomte (another castle) Giverny (Monet's home) Chartres Loire Valley Mont Saint-Michel Norman Battle Fields (this one and the prior one are ambitious) Disneyland Bruges Fontainebleau (another castle) Chantilly (like the cream) Auvers-sur-Oise (where Van Gogh spent his last days) I'm sure there's more.............but that's all I can think of for now!

WAIT -- I just re-read your post...........NEXT summer? I see you've got a type A personality! While I think getting suggestions from people online or stuff is usefull when you're getting ready to do more serious planning pick up a guidebook! A good one can work wonders. Cheers!

Yes, good suggestion. Guidebooks are great, I would recommend lonely planet western europe - i like it. There's tons of stuff to do in all these cities to keep you busy for three days each for sure, but here's some quick suggestions. Barcelona - Montserrat, a great bus ride, amazing scenery! Sitges, Tarragona. Paris - I think CT covered that Venice - I'm not the one to ask Florence - ½ day trip to Pisa Rome - You'll have your hands full with stuff to do in Rome. Be sure to Visit Vatican City.

Rome: Tivoli/Villa d'Este - beautiful parks with fountains and stuff. Ostia Antica - Rome's old harbour city, interesting ruins even after a few days in Rome. Sperlonga - the most beautiful place along the sea in southern Lazio, if you'd like to go swimming for a day (halfway to Naples).
Naples is worth a stay of its own. Make sure you visit Pompei, Mt Vesuvio, Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi...
Florence: Fiesole (village just outside), Pisa, Lucca, Siena, even Bologna could easily be reached on daytrips. And Cinque Terre isn't that far away, either.
Venice: Padova and Verona are the two most obvious choices, but I hear Vicenza is nice too.
Paris: Many of the places listed by previous posters are in my opinion a bit too far away to be reached on day-trips. At least by train. Versailles and Chartres are the two most obvious choices to go to. Reims is also fairly close, as are several cities in the Loire valley - Orleans, Blois, Tours... I'm not sure how easy it is to get to any of the more interesting chateaus by public transportation, though. To Brussels (Belgium), you can also get very fast on the Thalys non-stop train.

While in Venice- :(can't imagine leaving! You do not have to spend all your time in Venice proper. Spend a day at the beach on 8-)Lido; roam around Murano & Burano on :Danother day. All are easily reached via water transport.
Someone meantioned :)Verona. Another worthy daytrip. If you want to go further afield, Laga de Garda is lovely. There are several options of towns/villages to visit. It may be pushing it to go for the day though.
