I'm studying abroad in Vienna this fall semester and plan on travelling around Europe during January. I don't have a set itinerary and am open to going pretty much anywhere. Where would be the best cities/countries to visit given the weather?

Anywhere you want! Depends of what sort of weather you can comfortably deal with. I am the 'winter' traveler here, can assure you that the weather can indeed be fabulous in January/February......and then again not, depending on the sort of weather year that is going on. In 2002 I was in Italy in January...mid 60's-mid 70's, gorgeous blue skies, wonderful breezes...could not ask for better. This coming year? A gamble of course. I was also in France, from Nice, up the west coast to Paris, again, great weather. Your chances of cloudy/rainy/gloomy days are of design much higher in the winter months.....but surely not guaranteed. As I said, in 2002 I had wonderful weather in Europe, in Jan 2003 I had nothing but gloom and doom in England and Ireland. Overall, your chances of good weather are of course better the further south you are...but even that is no guarntee. Take rain gear and warmer clothes and enjoy enjoy enjoy the decided lack of crowds, hoardes, high prices!
