I'll be going to london, paris, all around italy, greece and austria in May....and i'm having trouble packing since the weather changes a lot between those places.
I have a waterproof shell from my ski jacket that I'm planning to bring...but it is kind of thick so it will take up some room....is that a good option or maybe just bring an umbrella and use those waterproof ponchos when it rains?

i had a water resistent shell and then hid under my friend's umbrella. a gortex shell just takes up too much room. i'd go with the umbrella.

I'd say a jacket. You can get a thin GoreTex that will take up literarlly as much room as an umbrella. The problem with umbrellas is that you have to carry them and they can be a pain in the butt. I spent most of my life living in one of the rainiest cities imaginable (Vancouver) and I have never owned an umbrella.

I took a rain jacket that folded up into a small pouch. I think it cost maybe 15 dollars. made a decent pillow in a pinch too.

I brought a Marmot Precip jacket. It folded into a pouch as well. Great jacket. Breathable - which will help for the hot and rainy climates.

you can find a pretty thin gortex jackets on many outdoor sites. i bought a marmot winter jacket that had an outer layer that i could separate from the thicker inner lining. i know it was a marmot but not sure the name. check out www.travelcountry.com

we should specify maybe that goretex jackets cost a minimum of 300$ (3 ply at any rate) and often up to 600$ particularly when you want a really thin one that doesn't take up much room.
i don't tend to use umbrellas much either but that's cause its mostly too windy here for them to be of much use.
however, umbrella or rain jacket. if you're not using it... you gotta carry it! they make some pretty small umbrellas these days that more than amply fit into a daypack.

I took with me a super-compact Totes brand umbrella that I got for $6 US at an outlet mall. It fit neatly in the pocket of my thin non-waterproof summer jacket that I take everywhere. It provides about as much coverage as a regular umbrella and it's windproof too - so it didn't get ruined in that freak hailstorm in Prague. I didn't have the money for a good rainjacket that would have taken up the same amount of space.

Might want to think about how far/often your going to be walking with your pack on. obviously it could be avoided in most cases, but there very well could come a time when its pouring and you need to walk with your pack on which a jacket will not cover but a decent umbrella probably will...key word being probably. If you have a waterproof pack thats one thing, but if not it could be more important to keep your pack dry and get a little wet with an umbrella.
