I slept with my money belt on. but maybe i'm just paranoid. especially since i hardly ever encountered a hostel with a locker. i'd usually stick my day pack in my sleep sack .

Not a silly question Michelle, I'd like to know too. Better to ask the questions than be sorry later.
Anyone else care to chime in on what they do with their money belts while sleeping? Wouldn't it be bothersome to be sleeping with it?

Michelle, et al..... no doubt everyone has their own strategy for storing their Money Belt while sleeping. I tend to use whichever approach is best for the circumstances. I've slept with the Money Belt on at times, but have also used the Lockers (where available) if these seemed to be well constructed with a robust Hasp assembly. I'm not too worried about anyone compromising the Padlocks I use, as (a.) they CAN'T be picked and (b.) any attempt to pry these off to break-in will undoubtedly make some noise.
There are other solutions - the Money Belt could be rolled up inside some clothing and placed inside the "pouch" in the sleep sack that holds the pillow. It could be placed in a secure pocket (sealed with velcro) in the shorts that I'm sleeping in. I'm sure there are other methods. I doubt that I would ever lock the Belt inside a Backpack though, as it's just not secure enough (might wake up and find the Backpack "slashed"!).
Good luck finding a solution that works for you. Have a great time on your trip!!!

I have slept with a moneybelt, or with my purse attached to me. I just got used to it, and I'm a sound sleeper so that helps. Maybe experiment before you leave just to see if you can work out a comfortable arrangement.

i found my sleepingbag-bag quite usefull for this: put your wallet and stuff in this bag, then put this bag in you sleeping bag at night. hard to reach and find from outside without to wake you up - quite smart eh?! ;D

i just slept with it. i sleep in surgeon's scrubs with a drawstring. i just tie the pouch with it.
a bigger issue for me was "what to do with money belt in the shower?" i sealed it in a zip-lock and set it on the water knobs, where i could keep an eye on it. i worried about it getting soaked, but it didn't happen.

Passport doesn't fit though.

i've always thought of my passport as the most important/valuable thing i carried. I got one of those rectangular water-safes (for the beach or swimming pool) - they're sized to hold credit cards - and were big enough for my cards, my money, and my keys. Passport doesn't fit though.

you could just take a large ziplock bag and put your valuables in that...take it in the shower with you.

First, ask yourself this, "How protective am I?"
I have spent many a night with my money belt still wrapped around my waist. This isn't always so comfortable, so I have also slept with it in the bottom of my sleeping bag by my feet. I wouldn't advise to keep it under your pillow, that's just too easy to steal from (think of the tooth fairy).
Not all hostels will have lockers. Bring a lock so you can use one when they are there, but don't expect it.
Keep your valuables on you at all times? YES. Never leave them anywhere, but be prepared to separate from them if you are in a dangerous situation. You shouldn't bring anything with you that you aren't ready to lose or have stolen. Thieves will even steal your alarm clock.
My best advice: If you are planning on bringing something along that if you lose it will ruin your trip, don't bring it.
Cheers
P.S. If there is anything else, just ask!

my question is even sillier:
i expect to sleep with my moneybelt on, but what to do with it while having sex? it would be a bit strange to keep it on! and that handsome stranger may not be the most trustworthy fellow.

don't have any insight about the moneybelt, but be sure to have plenty of protection with you! it has been suggested in the past that quality condoms aren't always available. be prepared - and don't trust "that handsome stranger." he might be packing a cheap condom. there was a thread about this a while back. - d i expect to sleep with my moneybelt on, but what to do with it while having sex? it would be a bit strange to keep it on! and that handsome stranger may not be the most trustworthy fellow.
