I've been talking with my sister, and neither of us have been backpacking before. She's certain we should bring a couple nicer "tops" or the like for eating out and night life, but from everyone else's packing lists I've been assuming I'd be bringing clothes I don't care for. Did anyone bring any "nicer" clothing to go out? Did you not go out at night? Did you just wear your backpacking clothes at night?
Thanks!

Yes definitely bring something aside from trainers and jeans but it all depends what your version of nicer clothes is and whether when you get there you will feel comfortable in them. "smart casual" is usually the go for yoof hostels; if you are going to stay in hostels and go out with others from the hostel then you should be fine in your day clothes - dress up and cake yourself in makeup and you end up looking out of place with everyone else. And if you are travelling on a budget then you need to consider that it's unlikely you will afford to get into places with a dress code anyway unless you are planning on meeting someone on your travels to pay your way (!). But then you might like to go out to trendy bars in which case you might have to develop some sort of easily-transportable style concept - depending on where you go nighttime might be cold so you have to consider the coat situation not just the clothes you wear underneath. For girls I think a crushed silk dress and pair of *comfortable* sandles works great in summer, crushed silk looks great, takes up next to no room and is easy to pack, and the sandles will double-up as beach wear or just plonking around town in. But don't bother taking heels or anything impractical like that. Winter will be more difficult in fact I would suggest too difficult to do anything apart from "neat casual" and still be able to carry your pack on your back. If you can't work out what to take then leave a bit of space in your bag and buy something "nicer" when you arrive and can work out what sort of stuff you want to wear, this also serves as a good excuse to go clothes shopping which is generally a no-no for backpackers.

definately bring some "nice" clothes. but not a lot! a top or two. when i went backpacking across europe, every city you will go to offers some new nightlife. and you definately want to look nice. you really don't want to go to a nice resturtant/nightclub/bar, in your tired old clothes you've been wearing for the past however long and have not washed in even longer. as well you don't want it to be sooo obvious that you are not from that locale. when you're actually backpacking wear bummy clothes. just remember when it comes to packing your bags -- less is always more...you'll be thankful when your back is killing you from all the weight.
