Anyone have any advice about somewhere to visit in Southern Italy, other than Sicily? Maybe a nice beach town.

I haven't been to southern Italy yet, but I've heard Rimini is a nice beach/party/resort town.

Yeah, Capri is beautiful. You take a ferry from Naples to get there. Accommodation can be a bit pricy but not outrageous. You want to find out where you accommodation is located as well as some are way the heck out.
The Blue Grotto is a must see on Capri.

The Blue Grotto is a must see on Capri. Kim I have to disagree with you here Kim. I visited the Grotto Azurro, and found the whole experience a bit disappointing. The grotto itself is nice, but how much can you enjoy it when you are being put in a boat with an off-key singing sailor (o sole mi-NOOOO! ) and get a quick 30 second 'trip' into the actual grotto? The boatride to the cave itself would have been nice, if we didn't have had to wait so long in the boat cue, causing me to get seasick. Me and my friends thought we could have spent those two hours and our money better elswhere.

Really? We didn't have to wait in line at all. I thought it was really cool. Touristy yes, but I liked it. Our boat guy took lots of pictures for us and I thought the color was amazing.
Maybe it depends on when you go and what time of day - I have heard that you should go early to avoid the crowds so that's what we did.
Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't go to Capri just for that but if you are already there..

The boat trip to the Grotto (30min single trip, I think) was beautiful. But when we got to the grotto we just floated in front of it for an hour or so, because of the crowds. Maybe we did pick a wrong time to go there. And although the colour of the water was amazing, the 30 seconds I got to see it, weren't worth it. And, as a choir singer myself, I HATE it when people sing off-key. Cat

Popopo,
I taught Engish in southeast Italy last summer in a town called Ostuni. I always hear and have seen for myself that if you want to see the "real" Italy, you have to stay to the south and away from the touristy west coast. The city of Ostuni is beautiful and I can't believe it isn't a more popular spot (probably because of travel time to get there). It can be reached in 6 hours from Naples and the surrounding area is amazing. The coast is beautiful and uncrowded as well. If you're looking for out of the way Italian towns in the south, check out the area!

cheers, Joel!
Ostuni looks to be very close to Brindisi. i've long heard good things about the "heel" of Italy's boot.
could you give more details of your Summer in Ostuni? how'd you find the job?
i'd be interested in something like that.

Yes, Ostuni is very close to Brindisi and is on the same train line (about 30 minutes, if I remember correctly). I taught English with Global Volunteers two summers ago. I was just looking for something helpful to do while I traveled instead of just "taking" from the places I was visiting. The teaching was for two weeks and the whole thing was great. I honestly can't say enough about the program and how great it was. It's sort of expensive to do the project, but factoring in room and board at a really nice hotel and all the things you get to do with your group, it was worth it. It's also a great way to really experience the culture instead of just seeing the touristy stuff for a few days. I'd be glad to give you any more information if you're interested. Let me know!

wow. just checked out the Global Volunteers website. they charge thousands of US$ to place you. seems odd to pay large sums to a company so that you'll have the privilege of unpaid work.

we were in italy just last may and went to capri. What we ended up doing was renting a small dinghi (spelling?) for the entire day and boating around the entire island to see the other various grottos (they give you a map with suggested paths to take); definitely worth it. We boated right by the blue grotto and felt very sorry for all those people being pushed in and out. good luck
