I will be going to Italy for a month in September and I was wondering if it would be possible to only travel with a carry-on luggage or backpack? I'm thinking only bringing clothes for 7-8 days and do laundry every week?
Since I'll be travelling from city to city often, I'd rather have as little as possible. What do you guys think?

you can definately travel with just a backpack. i did that on my trip. my friend and i brought along about 3-4 days worth of clothes for our 2 week trip. we only used our school backpacks and we didn't have any problems. since we didn't check any of our luggages at the airport we could just skip on to the customs and out of the airport in no time.

It's definitely doable, just make sure you're not packing anything prohibited for carryon. It's convenient, especially if flying.

you won't be able to do it for 7-8 days of clothing. but if you're willing to do laundry every 3-4 days you're good. but that means no swiss army knives, utensils or nail clippers!

Is it worth it to only take carry on? I mean don't you need a nail clipper or a swiss army?

As David said, up till now it was possible to get on board with a backpack, but last month the EU announced some stricter rules for flying, that will basicly only allow, luggage the size of a notebook-case to get on board as carry on, all the rest should be checked-in. Now of course the question will be how strict these rules will be upheld, but after the 'scare in London', things are taken more serious.

they're restricting the luggage you can carry on board? i just hope they'll relax this rule by next year. i do understand that they're doing it for security reason.

That's highly unlikely, because these are the new rules agreed at the European Union. If i can find the exact rules, I will post them. These new rules are btw NOT the rules as implemented by Great Britain. EDITI've made a new thread in the transportation section of the message board, here you can find an article about the new rules. pretravel.proboards1.com/index.cgi?board=Transportation&action=display&n=1&thread=4818
