Just a tip: It is very useful to pack your stuff in little bags, so you won't have to turn you pack inside out evry time you need something like socks, underwear etc. Some people use plastic bags for that purpose. I hate that! When you want to unpack late at night or early in the morning, you'll wake up evrybody in that room. Not a good way to make new friends... I use linen bags and just keep some plastic bags, well hidden away, for my dirty/wet stuff. My friend tells me I'm obsessed with this 'minor' problem. What do you think? Am I over-reacting or are there people with similar experiences?

No I have never used plastic bags (like the kind that you get at a grocery store). All of my clothes are just packed neatly in my backpack and toiletries in one section (they are all on a ziplock for easy carrying to bathroom) and pretty much other stuff just packed in different sections. I too use earplugs, but they do prevent you from hearing your own alarm (if you need to get up (say to catch an early train). I also use either a laundry bag or a large garbage bag for my dirty clothes (wet clothes should not go in plastic bag for long time - otherwise you will have mold and other discusting stuff.

fortunately, the hostels where i've stayed have had wake up service, to get me to planes on time. i've made a point to not schedule train departures too early. [one time, i slept through an alarm, so i missed a train to frankfurt so i missed a flight home for X-mas! after rescheduling the flight, i just went on to the airport and crashed there! that probably wasn't a very safe place to sleep for a young american in `85!]
