Hi again, I'll be backpacking in Europe in April/May 07 and coming from Australia, I really have no idea about what sort of shoes will be best for the climate in europe at that time (We are starting in London and going to Paris, AMsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Munich, Lucerne, Venice, Rome, Florence, Nice and Barcelona).. obviously will need something comfy for walking around a lot.. my delima is that everyone is telling me to get nice boots so I can wear them out at night.. I am a small girl and unfortunately EVERY pair of boots I have ever tried on, I have a masssive gap around the top so it just doesn't work.. Has anyone got any other suggestions? Or the other alternative is for my to buy something when I get there, but if I do that I run the risk of having to buy something very expensive... Any help will be useful!!! One last question would be what type of clothes to pack, I am planning on 2 pairs of jeans and prob about 7 -10 (very light) tops which I can layer and one jacket for the day and a slightly dressier one for going out.

I don't think I would get boots, even if they worked for me. If you are going out to a place you will need nice shoes at night, how about a pair of ballet flats, in addition to a pair of superb walking shoes? These are small and easy to pack, compared to boots. I wouldn't want to walk around for 10-15 miles per day in ballet flats, which is about the distance you can expect to walk as an active tourist on the go. But for some night-time use, I think they'd be fine. Also, ballet flats could likely handle cobblestones much better than high-heeled boots or shoes.

Do.not.buy.boots!
You will regret it from all the walking!
Bring a good pair of running shoes or hiking shoes. Broken-into shoes are the best kind and you could bring some dressy flip-flops or sandals as well that you could stuff into your pack for a night out and to wear around the hostel!

Thanks guys for that !! I think I might just go with the ballet flats as I can dress them up with nice jeans and top for going out I do have a pair of low strappy heals that I could take as well, these don't weigh much at all and I could chuck them out at the end of the tour.. Thanks again, i'm just organising myself early lol i've got another post on the itinerary part of this website to so if you have any advice for that pleassseeeee let me know.

Just remember that in the North (London - Amsterdam) it can rain a lot in April (I am not saying it will), so you need some goods shoes to keep your feet dry, but in the South (Barcelona) it can be really hot in April or May, so you don't want to have shoes that don't ventilate.
Main thing is, bring shoes that are comfortable for walking.
