Munich, in the South, has some of those traits. as does Mainz area, in Central part of Germany. but, Berlin is the best of them. - d

Thank you all for being so technical regarding "Western" ( I was refering to geographic location not defunct political associations)..........but in reality i've heard nothing but bad things about berlin and munich. Most people have told me to avoid them both at all cost.

I think your people are wrong about Berlin. It's one of my favorite cities in Europe. I've never been to Munich, but would trust David on its positive qualities.

Ive heard people say that Berlin is very un original and also "there is nothing there that hasn't been ripped off from somewhere else in europe" but thats not based on my own experiences. I have heard great things about Heidelburg and Turbingen what do you think?

>>>>fainting at my desk....... Berlin is 'un-original' and ripped off from somewhere else??? Among the finest European cities, chock full of architecture, Art, History like no other, nightlife, shopping, green space, vibrant, exciting.......unoriginal? Honestly, I am stunned.

Turbingen? Over Berlin or Munich? A nice smallish university town.....expect sidewalks to roll up by midnight. Who in the world is offering travel advice?

Berlin is an incredible city, everyone should go at least once. But stay away from that god awful checkpoint charlie area, buy the book, you will see the same thing and spend your time visiting something else.

Berlin is the city of Anti-climaxes.
ITs all 'This is where this great buliding once stood, it has since been bombed into the ground and an apartment has been erected in its place'
Munich is better, stay in the south...more to do there

Berlin was a devided city, once upon a time. so, in the Cold War, both sides used Berlin as a showplace for all that was good about the respective systems. the Western powers poured cash into West Berlin, the Soviets poured what they could into the Eastern sector. consequently, much was built there. basically, the city still has at least 2 of everything - but the city government wants to shutter some of these "duplicates," to save funds. if you like shopping, KaDeWe [KaufhausDesWestens] is a big department store with a history. it's not just Cold War history. Berlin has much of the cultual baggage from being capitol of Prussia, as well as Germany. there's a *lot* of stuff to see there. look here -> www.berlin.de/english/visitors/index.htmland here -> www.berlin.de/english/entertainment/index.html

Well, the judge, glad to hear your positive comments!
(Sorry guys, but to me, this answer does not fit into our "philosophy" here!)
