Berlin is worth a visit just to say you've been there but personally I was pretty dissapointed by it....outside the wall and brandenburg tor it felt like I was in Toronto or any other nondescript city. good thai food though.

I agree that berlin is not the most beautiful city around, but i found it fascinating! the history there is overwhelming and I found the contrast in buildings from bombed out to brand new modern ones very interesting. I also found it very vibrant and alive perhaps because it is in a state of transition.

Hi, I'm going to be going backpacking through much of western europe this june/july. I'm not sure what german city to stop in. I only have time to visit one city in germany on my way from switzerland (grimmelwald and interlaken) to amsterdam. I was looking at Frankfurt or Munich. any suggestions? also not sure how hard it is going to be to get from grimmelwad through germany to amsterdam, its the end of my trip and a bit of a gap geographically.

I was looking at Frankfurt or Munich. any suggestions? between Frankfurt or Munich, Munich is the unquestionable winner. but, if Frankfurt region is better for your schedule, Mainz is a *much* more interesting city than Frankfurt! [Frankfurt is a bankers town, not a tourist town]
