Hi all.... My first post on a great board. I've learned a lot!
My fiance and I are honeymooning in Europe June/July. We are very interested in going to Gimmelwald based on the advice here...
But...
I've got friends in Germany who keep telling me to not waste my time. Although they've never been there, they say Switzerland is way too expensive, and that there are better places in Austria for hiking.
Should I ignore them or what? Gimmelwald sounds pretty sweet to me.
Thanks! Andrew Y

qubiochem, first of all, welcome to the Board. A few comments on the questions you raised.
Your friends are correct in that Switzerland is very expensive. Also, there may be equally good hiking spots in Austria, but it's the overall character of Gimmelwald and surrounding area that makes it special. IMO it would be worth a visit! As you pointed out, your friends haven't been there so they may not be aware of the unique qualities of that particular community. The residents of Gimmelwald have a saying -- "if heaven isn't what it's cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald".
Hope this helps. Congratulations on your upcoming marriage and happy travels!!!

I've never been to Austria. However, I can say that Gimmelwald is probably the most beautiful place I've ever been to. The scenery is unparalleled and the "feel" of the village is just so unique. I love the saying that Eagle just wrote- Gimmelwald really is like heaven! It's just so peaceful, I can't say enough about it! A friend of mine (who's from Switzerland) had never even heard of it and he thought I was crazy to go visit a tiny little "hick" village... until he saw the pictures. Now he's planning on visiting Gimmelwald when he visits his family next summer! Have a great honeymoon!

Jen & i are in different situations. i've never been to Gimmelwald, but was impressed by tyrol, in austria. someday i'll have to go to Gimmelwald.
Innsbruck & the regional towns are really interesting as well as beautiful! having studied economics in college, i was fascinated by the monetary museum in hall. hall is where the taler was first minted. {taler is a unit of currency, the name of which eventually evolved into dollar} the displays there show much of how monetary systems developed.
