Hey,
This is my first post on the boards, but I have been reading them for a few months and all the information is great!
I was wondering where people liked to stay in the Cinque Terre, and how long one should spend there. This will be the last leg of a month long trip with my girlfriend. I've heard the hostel in Manarola is nice; do they only have single-sex dorms though? Are there any other places in that town or others that are good and cheap?
Thanks!

The hostel in Manarola doesn't have any private rooms which is why we didn't stay there. We stayed here and it was really nice. We had a room with a shared bathroom but you only share with one other room so it's no big deal. We never saw anyone else using it. www.torrettas.com/ing_html/file_pages/pag2.htmlI think the price sort of depends on the time of the year, it will be alot more in high season. Kim

Thanks.. I looked into it.. they charge 47 euro (per room, not person) for the student room with two bunks, and 110 euro for the double room. Did you stay in the student room when you where there? It seems like a pretty nice place overall.. We'll most likely try and stay there.

I second Kim's suggestion of Torrettas. The student room is basic but comfy, the owner was friendly and my sister and I liked the place very much. (The big difference with their regular rooms is that they don't provide towels or breakfast, but we didn't miss any of those things)
I have very fond memories of sipping lemoncello on the patio while playing with the cats and looking at the scenery....

Last summer I stayed at Cinque Terre Holidays in Riomaggiore and it was decent if you're looking for a low price and good location. Riomaggiore is the southernmost town and supposedly the least touristy (seemed like it to me). The dorms were set up in rooms. Mine had three different rooms with two beds each and a central kitchen. The staff wasn't even in the dorm, so it was more like an apartment up the hill from the main office. I would recommend the place!

i also stayed with Cinque Terre Holidays in Riomaggiore. it was awful! it was a little 1 room appartment stuffed with 3 bunk beds & a twin bed.
the sheets were filthy, blankets smelled of urine, bathroom (which was out in the main entry hall for the apt block) hadn't been cleaned. . . maybe never. and the noise of the trains in the tunnel at night! despite earplugs, i could hardly sleep!
at €20+ /night, it was criminal!
it was really, really bad.

Dave/Joel,
Are you guys talking about Torretta's, or just the town of Riomaggiore in general?

Jeff, I believe they're each talking about the lodgings they received from Cinque Terre Holidays in Riomaggiore? My impression from reading the posts is that both parties dealt with the same booking agency, but it sounds like they were given different properties to stay in (one favourable and one not-so-favourable).
Torrettas is a B&B in Manarola, so I don't believe either person was referring to this (David / Joel -- correct me if I'm wrong?). The pricing structure for Torrettas has been described as "complicated", but if you have the funds this would be a great spot to stay. I've heard only very good comments about Torrettas.
Happy travels!!!

Do you think three days is too long to stay here? My girlfriend and I are the type of people that tend to get bored.. We only have two days planned for Innsbruck, and we're big outdoor people, maybe we could add a day there..
What do people think?

I stayed at a B&B in Manarola (Can't remember the name but it was an old Italian couple's house run by their American daughter-in-law Christine) and it was really good and really cheap with yummy free coffee!! We stayed for 3 nights and I loved it, could have easily stayed for a few more!

I stayed at the hostel in Manarola recently. It was overpriced, had too many rules, all day lock-out, and had no character. Boring overall. But it was the only hostel I could find with vacancy upon arriving there. The campsites were all full. Also, the church next door has a bell tower that sounds the time every hour on the hour. I hope you're a heavy sleeper. No wonder they had free beds when everything else was full. P.S. Cinque Terre is positively choked with tourists throughout the summer. I left after two days because I couldn't stand the crowds.

Since this thread popped up again, I figured I'd add my two cents following the trip..
We ended up staying at Albergo Barbara in Vernazza (http://www.albergobarbara.it/). It was only a couple rooms, but they had a great view overlooking the harbor and were clean and nice (and only 48 euro a night for a double room in June, which was a steal). There are also many great places to eat in Vernazza.
Cinque Terre was a bit touristy (especially Monterosso), mainly with Americans, but to us the scenery and the atmosphere of the towns far outweighed that crowds. I'd definately recommend it to everyone.
