Hello all!
My boyfriend and I have recently decided to backpack Europe this summer. I was wondering what experienced travellers thought were the must destinations for a first backpacking trip (taking into account that it'll be a month long, give or take).
What are your thoughts?
(P.S. I've already been to Geneva and Vienna, so don't include these cities, I want to discover!)

I've been to Europe several times, but I still have lots of must-sees to get to. I'd recommend Italy generally with the highest praises, but the fact is it's hot and humid in the summer, and very crowded in the most popular places. So in general, my summer preference would be for northern and central and eastern Europe. Think about your climate preferences, and your budget. Would you like countryside or urban, or both?
Consider London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague for starters (or maybe that would be enough for one month!).

dominique, can you provide further information on areas that you might want to see? Since you've been to Geneva and Vienna, probably best to visit countries you haven't been to. A month isn't a long time and since you'll be travelling during "tourist season", very precise planning would be a good idea.
Here's one suggestion:
-- England (5 days? first day used for flight time & jet lag) -- France (4 days?) -- Belgium (3 days?) -- Germany (3 days?) -- Switzerland (3 days, including travel?) -- Italy (12 days, several cities, including travel?)
Once you've chosen which countries to visit you can focus on which cities to see, based on the sightseeing you want to do. "Open jaw" flights would likely be best, and you'll have to choose a Rail Pass / budget flights once you've decided on your destinations.
Good luck with your planning!
