So I'm thinking about including Nice on my itinerary for this summer's trip. I have read many mixed revise on the board about Nice and if you don't mind repeating yourself a little bit, would you mind consolidating some of your opinions here. I will be traveling from Barcelona to Nice and from there to Florence. A few questions:
1. Should I go to Nice?
2. If yes, how many nights should I stay (2-5)?
3. If no, where should I go instead that is not too far out of the way between Barcelona and Florence?
Thanks for all your input. You guys have really inspired me to travel and to talk to people to get their opinions. ;D

i thoroughly enjoyed nice. the beaches are pebbles (small ones) which really didn't bother me at all. it was actually refreshing not to end up with a bag full of sand! i stayed three days. 2 days i spent on the beach and the third day i took a day trip to monaco which was amazing. the aquarium is outstanding! i liked my two days on the beach cause it provided a nice break from museums and churches. it was very relaxing and let me get some of my energy back i would say if you want to beach it only than 2 days. add an extra day for any other day trips you want to do... monaco, cannes... etc... my 2¢: Monaco, Nice & even Cannes could easily be reached from Italian Riviera, if you want to see them. personally, i found Italians to be more welcoming. i don't speak French, so that may have made them less welcoming. but, i don't speak Italian either.
also, if you're wanting to cross from Spain to Italy, why not fly Barcelona (or nearby Gerona) to Naples, Rome or however South in Italy you plan to go - seeing the places you wish to see in Italy as you go North toward Austria, Switzerland, or Monaco & SE France.
booked ahead, flying is often cheaper than rail. for such long distances, it's also much faster. [about 2 years ago, i flew from Bilbao to Rome. worked great!]
edit: i see elswhwere you're not planning to go South of Florence. i'd forgotten.
well, i see a flight from Girona to Pisa on Ryanair for €44.19 total. <BARCELONA - FLORENCE on Meridiana is €81.44 total> (both of these prices include tax)

I didn't want to start a new thread, but I have a Nice-related question as well. I'm wondering if Nice is worth it as an in-between for Barcelona and Cinque Terre. And if I skip Nice, what about Provence?

i did nice as an in between for barcelona and florence, and it was not too bad, it still is quite a long trip. although, are you going by train? if so, its not as bad. Also, If you do go to Nice you should not stay too long, there really isn't that much to do, but of course you could take a trip to Monaco

I am traveling to Barcelona in August. We want to go to Nice. I have no idea how to get there, do I get a Eurorail pass, a one way ticket? I am confused.

it depends. if those are the only places you're going, a pass would be a waste of yer money. I am traveling to Barcelona in August. We want to go to Nice.

I was there for 2 days, one day we were in Monaco and the other day we were at the pebbly beach in Nice and shopping. I think we could have done with another day in Nice, but Monaco we did in one day.
