I'd like to visit Germany on my oddessy this summer. Munich is a must, as my family is originally from there. My mom keeps raving about a trip she took when young, bicycling through the black forest. Now, it sounds cool, but I come from Vancouver Island, so large forested areas are not a novelty to me. I do like hiking, but perhaps I'd be better off doing that in Switzerland. Has anyone spent time in the Black Forest area and have any recommendations?

Thanks for the advice David! And no, my main point of the trip isn't for natural beauty - I know I can't beat that at home! It's more a culture, history, and see new things trip. I hadn't even thought about Austria, but I'll check into the areas you suggested!

imagine this post is above Ashley's 2nd post. i was trying to edit it and moved it here instead. Spent a semester in Freiburg many, many years ago. it was nice but i suspect Vancouver Is. blows it away for natural beauty. (never been much North of Victoria myself) are you interested in "natural beauty?" for someone from BC to go to Europe for natural surroundings really fits the "coals to Newcastle" cliché. my suggestions for Southern Germany for you would include Fussen, for the less new castles. and Konstanz, a beautiful old, historic city. [much of it actually old, not reconstructed] near Munich, in Austria, is Salzburg, also a beautiful city. Innsbruck is another interesting Austrian small city. Innsbruck might be a good stop between Salzburg & Konstanz.

looking at some of your posts, AshleyG, this is the order that strikes me as good. but, i could easily be wrong: fly to UK fly to Prague Munich Salzburg Innsbruck Füssen Konstanz fly Zürich to Madrid fly home from Madrid (but, if there's time, other parts of Spain are even more fabulous than Madrid!)
Madrid will be equally hot in July & August. don't think there'd be a weather advantage of going there first or last in your trip.
