Haarlem is indeed a nice place to see (and close to Amsterdam), but if you like a city that is a little bit bigger then go and see Utrecht or Arnhem.

If you're going in Summer then Noordwijk is a nice spot to visit. Be sure to take your towel and some sunscreen!

Since Haarlem is near Amsterdam, at the end of August, is it still warm enough to go swimming, and also, are the beaches nice enough (ie.pollution...)? thanks

In Holland you will never be really sure about the weather, last year it was a really bad summer (If you like high temperatures). But normally August can be pretty warm. If you want to go swimming in the sea: August is good, because the water had a lot of time to reach a pleasant temperature in the summer-months.
Polution (of the water) is indicated by a flag-system at the beaches (you will have to check what every flag means, but I think a red flag will mean, don't go swimming, but I'm not really sure)
