I am travelling to Scotland this summer. I have bought a rail pass. I want to make a day trip from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh(the train would reach there at 11:20 am), travel to Mallaig and get the train from Mallaig to Glasgow (4:10 pm). I have no idea how long it can take to go from Kyle of Lochalsh to Mallaig. Can it be done in 4 and a half hours? I do not intend to do any sight seeing but just go to Mallaig to get to the train.
What would be the fastest way to travel between Kyle of Lochalsh and Mallaig?
It would be great to have some advice.

I'm going to have to get my journal out from that trip to tell you with any certainty....but I can tell you that the journey through the Great Glen from Inverness and especially the ride from Mallaig to Glasgow on the train is something you will never forget!! Get a seat on the left hand side leaving Mallaig.....the view will knock your socks off! I'll dig out the journal later and can give you some idea of times.....but it surely can be done. I did it, but in reverse from you and I stayed the night in Mallaig. It's a great little fishing village town...hopefully you iwll have an hour or so between trains that you can wander a bit.

I know you already have a train pass but I have found it really hard to find a train that does that journey from Kyle of Lochalsh to Mallaig. If DOM does know a way that would be great for you. If not you can get a bus that changes at Fort William and will take 3hrs 40mins. However it leaves at 11:30am which gives you no time in Kyle of Lochalsh. www.citylink.co.uk/A route planner that i use has suggested the best way to do the journey would be to travel to Armadale ferry port from kyle of lochalsh and get a ferry across to Mallaig from there. It says this is a journey of 1hr 50mins. But if you have a rail pass you would be spending extra money on the bus to the ferry terminal and on a ferry ticket. This site was suggested as the local bus service but for some reason my computer is refusing to let me see the timetables so can't check it for you. Hope you have more luck www.rapsons.co.uk/Good luck this one has stumped me a bit :-)

Thanks a lot for the info. I am expecting a lot from the trip. I checked out the link. I think I would get the bus from Kyle of Lochalsh to Armadale and then the ferry to Mallaig. Should not very expensive.

The Freedom of Scotland Travelpass and the Scotrail Area Rovers/Highland Rover, also cover transport on the Calmac (Caledonian MacBrayne) ferries and some busroutes on Sky. So if you have one of these you can take the bus from Kyle to Armadale and than take the Ferry to Mallaig, and get back on the train to Fort William. So if you have one these passes, it would cost you nothing. More information on the website of scotrail: www.firstgroup.com/scotrail/content/travelinfo/ticketsandfares.php?pageid=00000000017&ms=sub
