as of right now my itinerary looks like this:
I have basically 3.5 days in Vienna right now. arrive midday from Munich and spend the night. 2 more full days and nights. on the 4th night I catch a night train to Venice.
Meanwhile, I only spend this day (no night stayover) in Venice (after stepping off the night train from Vienna) before I catch another night train to Bari (to head to Greece).
This seems too rushed to me. Not enough time in Venice. How do I fix this? There are a few options I see: 1) Cut out Munich all together and add those days to Vienna (maybe a day in salzburg?) and Venice. 2) take a night train to Venice the previous night in Vienna, therefore leaving me with 2.5 days in Vienna. 3) later in the trip I spend 5 nights/4.5 days in Rome. do I take a day away from Rome?
Thanks

after reviewing my itinerary... It seems I also have the option of cutting Madrid out of my trip and adding those few days to the beginning of my trip, probably allowing time for all the aforementioned cities.

I actually spent one day in Venice as a day trip from Florence, and it was enough for me. It all depends on what you want to do/see there. For me, my goal was to visit San Marco and just wander around getting lost in the narrow streets and hunt for bridges that I would see down the canals (sometimes I never found them). I did all this in the 5 or 6 hours I was there and was completely happy with my trip, and it's especially easy because you can walk to most places easily. However, to really experience the city you would have to stay longer, but it can be done in a day trip.

i agree with GoJoel. you can see venice in one day. i did the same thing a few months ago when my friend and i took a early morning train from rome to see the city. we needed to get out of rome so we decided on a day trip. venice is a cool place to see with the canals, san marco square, and the narrow streets. there's not much else to see there so one day is good enough. don't change your itinerary unless you really want to spend a lot of time in venice.
