Hi, my friend and i (both female, both 18) are going to be leaving Amsterdam on June 10th and don't have another hostel reservation till the 16th in Berlin. I was wondering if anyone could suggest places in between the two cities that would be good to stop by during those 5 days? Hamburg, maybe? Thanks!

Hamburg has a rather seedy rep, but it seemed wholesome enough when i visited a few years ago.
you needn't limit yourself to Germany. Brugge, a Belgian city 3½ hours South of Amsterdam has a great rep! at least on these boards. i've never been.
Enschede, an Eastern Dutch city, might be worth a stop. again, i don't know it first hand.
in Germany, Köln <Cologne>, Düsseldorf, even Münster or Hanover are options. closer to Berlin, Lutherstadt-Wittenberg or Potsdam are options. [but, i've yet to visit Lutherstadt-Wittenberg]

I also was enchanted by my visit to Lubeck! Big big thumbs up from me. Dusseldorf was another sort of 'non-touristy' city that I had a fabulous time in. Kassel is yet another. Of the somewhat lesser known towns (not Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt) I'd say Cologne and Regensburg are must sees.
Oh....since you are going to Berlin anyway then I'd say Leipzig should definately be added to your list! That and/or Dresden.

That and/or Dresden. you should go for the last cities, cologne has the reputation to be the gayest city in germany ;D not sure where it comes from, but there is a tv series about 3 gays and 1 straight guy sharing the same apartment, plays in cologne. and some gay tv-comedians life there.

Well, Commie may be totally correct...I am a 50 something straight woman and adored this city. If it is the 'gay capital' of Germany it in no way intruded with my visit. These gay/straight labels rarely interact with the casual tourist and are generally speaking an unfair thing to place on any town. Is it gay? Hell, I have no idea after 5 days there and I had a great time!

Gaycapital? Didn't know that! I've been there over the past years for a month total and never noticed it had any kind of special gay attribute heheh
I reallllllllly loved Lübeck. It's different, has beaches nearby, but also an old town. If you want to get off the beaten track of big cities, go there!
Cologne, yes, wonderful, and Düsseldorf is a S-Bahn ride away!
Dresden is beautiful, buts its easier to do it after being in Berlin!

Lübeck is also the historic focal point of die Hansa, the Hanseatic League, a trading organisation from 12th century to 17th century which, in many ways, was the inspiration for what has now become the EU. to get from Amsterdam to Lübeck, you'd almost certainly need to change trains in Hamburg. if interested, you could make a stop in Hamburg to see a little of the place. Hey guys..thanks for all the advice! I will definitely check out some of the cities ya'll mentioned, especially Lubeck.
