Okay... so I'm really interested in WWII history, and I thought it might be interesting and a bit educational to backpack to places like Anne Frank's house, concentration camps, important cities, WWII monuments, etc.
The problem is... I don't know where to go. I mean, I can easily look up places in my high school history book, but I want to hit the really important or at the very least backpacker-friendly places. I'm not into stuff that's too touristy, and I'm definitely okay going off the beaten path for worthwhile stops.
Any suggestions?

www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/germany/nazigerm.htm - Rick has listed some sites you can visit in relation to the concentration camps! I wouldn't go there because it seems very sad and it's just horrible that it actually happened and I'd be freaked out... EDIT - He has listed various sites in several countries so you can check them out when you're visiting each of them

I'm also interested in WW-II sites, and will be visiting some on my current trip in Europe. Have a look at some guide books and also the Rick Steves site mentioned above, as there should be lots of suggestions there.
I toured Dachau last week, and found it very interesting although it didn't have the "intensity" of some of the other sites such as Auschwitz. I would highly recommend taking a guided tour, as the guides have an enormous amount of knowledge and really provide a good overview of what happened there. I used Radius Tours in the Munich train station, and found them to be excellent!
I'll be at the Normandy Beaches in a few weeks, and will post another note then. Good luck in your research.
Happy travels!!!
